Sound choppy when playing DVD in Windows Media Centre PC

I am no longer able to play a DVD on Windows Media Centre PC 2005. I have
done general PC housekeeping but no difference.

The PC is ADVENT but there is no information available from them on the
problem.

Sound is choppy / video is fine. PC is 160 Gig spare on disk, and this is
the only process running. DVD's play fine in Nero which is loaded on this PC.

Any advice ??

Plays fine in one player (Nero's) and not another (Windows Media Player)?

When you install a codec package, it makes these available to all players.

When you install a player with codecs bundled in, they may or may not share
the codecs with other players.

The difference that you're seeing is most likely due to a multimedia codec
that is licensed for use with Nero but not WMP. The solution would be to
install codecs that all of your players can use. These are usually included
in the software for video cards and recording drives (DVD or CD) but can be
purchased separately as well.

Still a catch-22: You need to confirm that the codec the "choppy" file
needs is included in the codecs you install. If it isn't, the sound will
remain choppy. You can usually find out what codec was used to create a
multimedia file by checking its properties.
