sound card problems

i have vista home prem on my main hdd and xp installed on my secondry hdd ,
yesterday my sound has dissapeared on vista (not muted)no sounds at all ,but
if i boot into xp the sound is finealso vista is telling me there are no
system restore points made yet i know i have used it and made some . i have
gone into device manager and removed the card(creative s/blaster 5.1 live
)rebooted and let it reinstall the drivers but i still have no sound .i am
thinking of buying a new sound card but i think i might have the same problem
as the old one is still "working"...just not on vista can anyone help with
any ideas? thanks
 
Does Device Manager show that the sound blaster is installed correctly?
Does the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar have a red X on
it?

If not, have you right clicked on the Speaker icon, selected Playback Devices,
highlighted Speakers and set them as Default, and gone through the Configure and
Properties buttons to set them up, and used the Sounds tab to test them?

Unfortunately, there's a bug in Vista that causes all restore points to be
deleted when you boot into XP on a dual boot setup.

Try going to the Creative website, downloading the latest Vista compatible
drivers for your card and installing those. NOTE: you may need to first
remove the current drivers installed for your card.
 
To Cal Bear '66:

sound card is installed properly (working fine before ) no red
cross,configured speakers ,when tested graphics showed "sound " but cannot
hear it and it is turned up
 
If the creative sound card is both digital and analog capable,
go to control Panel and double click Sounds.
set the speakers to analog if there is an analog / digital option.
 
micheal solomon thanks for advice that thing with system restore had me
stumped as for drivers creative do not support this card anymore but it had
been working fine on windows drivers until yesterday
 
That's a bummer.

And are you sure the Speakers have not been accidentally muted?

Have you checked the Creative Audio Console's settings?

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and the Creative Audio Console
would help? (Check Creative's site first for the latest drivers.)
 
Hey, Tony...how did you make the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 works on Vista?

I have the same card but couldn't on Vista, even with the same winxp
drivers.

I downloaded 3rd party drivers for that but they made a mess and after a lot
of struggle I returned to XP.

I am thinking in getting at least an Audigy SE that has Vista supported
drivers before trying again to upgrade to vista.

Tony123, what you describe is typical of what happens when they are no
longer supported. You're always walking a fine line and one day it can be
working only to find that it stops the next. It can be a Windows update, an
update to another application or device or even just some tweak or setting
that causes loss of function because such devices are borderline at best and
the user is living on borrowed time.

While there are legacy sound cards right now that have fully functional
drivers, I'm using the Creative Audigy 2 Value card, there should be new
Vista compatible cards available soon. Since mine is a legacy card, I
wouldn't recommend it assuming there is a laptop version of it available.

As to the System Restore, there's really nothing you can do except ditch
dual boot as quickly as possible because every time you log into XP, you'll
lose those System Restore points. You can use Virtual PC as an alternative
though you then have to allocate system resources to the other OS, cutting
down on the resources available for Vista. If you're not using XP much and
don't need it for anything too taxing, it's something to consider as an
alternative to dual booting.

Well... that's not completely true. One can use a 3rd party boot manager to
hide the Vista partion/drive from XP or one can use BitLocker to do the
same, if one has Business or Ultimate.

With a dual boot system each time you boot into XP your Vista restore
points, shadow copies and some other restore thingies are deleted by XP if
XP detectes the Vista install.

There are third party packages such as BootIt NG which hide the Vista
partition from XP and thus prevent this little trick.
