Sound Card not working Issue

Hi all,

I have looked and read at various posts in this room and I too have the same
problem. i had to do a clean install on my PC and since then there has been
no sound. I have discovered the model of my sound by going to :-

http://belarc.com/free_download.html

Which may help some people discover the makes and models of the audio
programs.

My audio programs are :-

C-Media AC97 Audio Device
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

The C-Media AC97 Audio Device is not working and I have tried unistalling it
and re-installing it but it says there is a probolem when I re-install and
still does not work. I don't have any discs with my PC and if I visit the
website for 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device' I really haven't a clue which things
to download. Please, please help me. Also I don't know how to remove the
sound card from the machine either (to put it back in)

Regards,

Miss. Caroline Thom.

After you installed XP, you needed to install drivers for all your
hardware - motherboard (chipset), sound (which is onboard), video, etc.
The drivers for the audio will probably be included in the motherboard
drivers. Contact the people from whom you got the computer for drivers
or go to the motherboard mftr.'s website for your specific model m/b.

Or, if you can't do this and this is a desktop machine (and everything
else is working correctly), go buy a PCI sound card, disable the
onboard sound in the BIOS, and install the PCI card. You can get a
basic sound card for under $25usd.

Thanks for the advice Malke,

I was kinda hoping I could do this by installing drivers from web. I will
definatley keep your advice noted though. If all else fails I will do what
you said.

Thanks again, Caz x

The web is your first stop. You need to know what motherboard you have
in your system. If you aren't able to get this information from the
people from whom you bought the computer (and really, they should have
given you cd's when you bought it) then use a system inventory program
to find out what m/b you have.

Aida32 is an older system inventory program that may still work for you.
Belarc also has a free program.

Jim Eshelman has Aida32 on his website - http://www.aumha.org/free.htm

Go to the store (or order online) and buy an inexpensive PCI sound card.
You can get a basic sound card for under $30 usd. I just bought two
C-Media ones from Geeks.com for $14.95 ea. and there are even cheaper
ones available.

Now go to Device Manager and uninstall your current sound card by
right-clicking on its entry and choosing "Uninstall". Shut down the
computer. If your current C-Media card is a PCI card, with the computer
unplugged open the case and remove the card. Put in the new card you
just bought and restart the computer. Install per the instructions that
will have come with the new card.

If your current C-Media is not a separate PCI card but is onboard, then
after you've uninstalled it from Device Manager reboot the computer
instead of shutting down and immediately go into the BIOS. Disable the
onboard sound. Save your settings, shut down the computer, and install
the new sound card.

That answers my question from the other thread, thanks.

You most likely just need to download the drivers form the manufactureres website. Does it show in
the Device Manager?
