sound and mixing devices

My computer keeps losing its sound settings, ie sound card as well as its
mixing devices, each time I update or reinstall it loses them again any
suggestions

If its a PCI card,uninstall in device mgr (all of its related sound
hardware),do
not restart pc,exit device when thru,shutdown pc.Move card to another PCI
slot (with power off),start pc when thru,reinstall....
