First, try the restore feature of XP and rollback the OS.

Try remove and re-install the latest XP compatible sound
drivers. If you have on-board sound chips, go to the mobo
manufacturer's website. For PCI sound card or brand named
PC, go to the manufacturer's website to download the
latest XP drivers.
