Sorting XLS when in Browser Window?

If an link for an Excel spreadsheet showed the file within
the browser window instead of launching Excel, can users
still sort by headings, or can that only be done within
Excel itself?

Yes user should be able to do everything they can normally do with a Excel
file, as long as they have Excel installed. They just can not save any
changes back to the web site.
