Sorting by conversation

I am using public folders as a sort of conference and I am really struggling
to get things to sort in the right order!

I can happily group by conversation, but if I then sort by conversation the
results are not as I would expect eg if I post messages with the following
subjects but in this order:

Mess1
Mess3
Mess2

I cannot get them to display 1,2,3 when grouped by conversation, they always
display in the order that they were posted.

I tried a suggestion I read elsewhere of sorting by subject (they display
1,2,3) and then dragging the conversation into the grouping box - and hey
presto they revert to sorting by date.

I'm using Outlook 2003.

And what if you set your view to;
Group By...: Conversation
Sort...: Subject

Don't drag & drop anything but use View-> Arrange By-> Custom...

Nope (that is actually where I started, I tried the drag and drop incase it
made a difference :-) )

The order is still the order I posted not the order of the subject!

did you change the sort order in the view to use subject, not date?

Yes - I have a custom view which has:

Group by... Conversation (ascending)
Sort...Subject (ascending)

And the messages appear
Project2
Project3
Project1

Try posting 3 conversations yourselves with an obvious numeric sort but post
them out of order and I think you will come up with the same thing.

Is this an Outlook bug or am I going mad??

Right click on the row of field names and choose Custom (or customize,
depending on your version) and verify the date field is not used.

Using Conversation index will cause some to appear out of order because it
links replies to originals but subject should group as you desire.

It truely does not include a date field (nor the converstaion index field).
