Sort order for Favorites - especially Links Toolbar

G

Guest

I have read several threads where people are requesting how to arrange their
Favorites in alphabetically order. I am trying to figure out the exact
opposite! I want my links to be in whatever order I put them in. I have
tried the drag and drop method and using the "Organize" option. Both methods
work at the time but once I close IE and go back in, the links return to
alphabetical order. I have also tried enabling and disabling the Advanced
Setting "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu" but no dice.

Any suggestions?

I had the exact same problem, and after much consternation, figured out that
you have to sort them from the Favorites menu of IE. They get messed up if
you ever accidentally open the folder...but if you go to Favorites on the
menu, then go to Organize Favorites, you'll see the Links folder is in that
little dialog, and you fix it from there.

This is a supremely annoying problem that has persisted over several
versions, and I can only hope that someone who is an IE developer takes pity
on us someday and FIXES this once and for all, because it's been YEARS that
this has happened, and I just recently figured it out.

Thanks for the reply but using Organize doesn't work either. It is changed
temporarily but then when I go out of IE and back in, it has reverted back to
alphabetical order.

Any other thoughts?

Open Favorites drop-down menu from topmost toolbar then drag 'em where you
want 'em. IOW, don't use the Favorites button.

It is controlled by the following Registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

Export the key in case you want it again, then delete it from the Registry.
This may enable you to use any order you choose.

Make sure that when you open the Links folder in Windows Explorer that you
sort by Icons instead of Details.

Yeah, for whatever reason, the Windows Explorer's settings override that. I
even found an article that told how to fix that in Windows Explorer and it
didn't work.

Thanks to all of you for replying to my post. I deleted the key and let IE
recreate it, as Uncle John replied below, and it worked like a charm!!

Thanks again!

I take it back! It's back to alphabetizing!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR

Are you *unlocking* the Toolbars before trying to change
the order of your Links? (Alt-V,T,b) ;)

Also note that both Favorites and Links have their own Order
value. BTW you should open those up after you close IE and verify
that the Order value contains the entries in the new order.
(It's a binary string but parts of it can be read in the interpreted portion
of the Value data field.) Otherwise the problem is that it is just not being
resaved, in which case perhaps it defaults to the Explorer view's
Icon order for that folder? Giving that a Last Changed order
might at least simulate what you want in that case.

Hmm... I just checked my Explorer view of that folder.
FWIW my default view is Icons and in it there is no order selected
In Details view the order is Last Changed.

Oops! My menu order and my Explorer order for Links *are* different!
The menu order is alphabetical at the moment. PA Bear's suggestion
to drag the link using the menu (after unlocking the Toolbars) was the
only thing which changed their order. (E.g. dragging the Links around
on the Links bar itself even when unlocked was ineffective.)

I have the exact opposite problem. I wish to have my Favorites in
alphabetical order. It is time consuming to go thru all of them to find the
one I want. and everytime I add a new favorite to my file it goes to the
bottom. Any suggestions??

Hi susan :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Alphabetize My Favorites

Click on the Favorites on the *menu* bar and when a favorite flies out,
right click on it and select "Sort by name." Do not use the Favorites on
the Toolbar or in the Favorites side panel, it will not work. You may also
do it from Start>Favorites

or…..

Alphabetize Favorites: Keep the Favorites Folder Organized!

or...this is what I use:

FavOrg: To set Favicons (subscription required)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Bookmark-Managers/favorg.shtml

This allows you to save them permanently in a different folder and
re-associate your favorites with the stored icons. It also verifies whether
your links in Favorites are stll good.

Hope this helps.
