Why can't I auto-sort My Documents? Especially since I access it via my
Start\Documents menu?

Double click it and go to tools, folder options, view, and make sure
"Remember each folders view settings" is checked. Then sort by what you
wish.

It is checked. But auto-arrange is grayed out.

So every time I get irritated by not finding new documents in order, I sort it.
It stays sorted, but new documents aren't.

"Auto-Arrange" is for the "Icon" views. Is the directory sorted when you
open it?

Opened how?

Not form the CMD prompt.

If I open the "My Documents" icon and rename test.txt to atest.txt, exit and
come back to My Documents, atest is sorted alphabetically.

But If I open START/DOCUMENTS/MY DOCUMENTS, I see ATEST.TXT at the end.

If you want the "Start Menu" listing sorted, please r-click on Taskbar,
select Properties, select Advanced, Click on "Resort". This will place
the "Start Menu listing" in Alphabetical order. Please note that this is
NOT the same as the directory itself but merely a listing of the
directory contents and may be rearranged at will.
