When I open my floppy disk of excel files there is no option to arrange by
name or alphabetical order.

How do you make a folder of excel files arrange by name/alphabetical order?

Thanks in advance.

The files are named eg John's a/c, Bob's a/c, Zang's a/c and many others.
They are in a floppy disk.

How do I have the files arranged in aphabetical order whenever I open the
disk to look for a particular file?

My point is that this is not an Excel question, so you are probably asking
in the wrong place. They would be in the same order if you tried to open
them in Word or any other app.

Michael just click on the Heading "Name" to sort in Ascending or Descending.
Or open the disk in Windows Explorer first the sort them there.

But these are accounts done in Excel app; there might be a way to arrange
them in alphabetical order when you open A:\ while in Excel app. I don't
believe groups other than Excel would know the solution.

This does have something to do with Excel.

I presume that you are trying to open the files with FILE > OPEN in
Excel. If you open this window, you should see the file /folder list
with the various columns 'Name' 'Size' 'Type' 'Date Modified'. If
you click on the column heading "Name" this will sort the list
alphabetically from A to Z - folder names will always be sorted
alphabetically at the top of the list, then file names automatically.
Clicking on NAME again reverses the sort order. Likewise clicking on
any of the other column headinsgs will sort by that column.

The sort selection appears to be sticky in that it will be the same
sort order when you restart Excel again (based on my limited testing).
This is not a feature that I have really looked at much, it is just one
of those things I use automatically. A similar process occurs if
looking at the files in Windows Explorer. With Explorer if you set the
sort order (and other settings such as displaying icons, list or
details - under VIEW) and then go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW
tab then you can make the settings for the active folder to apply to
all foledrs.

Thanks Isabel,

When I open the disk in Windows Explorer I can sort them in alphabetical
order as you said. But when I am in Excel app and I click/ Open I find no
place to sort; in the "Open" window the "Views" shows only Large Icons/
small icons/ List/ details etc but no "Names". The weird thing is, this same
disk in my colleagues computer using the same version of Excel, the files
are sorted in alphabetical order.

Thanks geo,

When I open the files in Excel with FILE > OPEN there is no columns 'Name'
'Size' 'Type' 'Date Modified'.

But when in Windows Explorer, I can sort without a problem. There must be
something I'm still missing.

Change to the Detail view.

Then you'll a header bar with Name, size, type, ... on it.

You can click on that header and sort by that field.

If you don't see Name...

you may have to turn it on (right click on the header and choose the fields you
want to see).

Or you may have to adjust the column widths so that it's not hidden.

Or you may have use the scroll bar at the bottom to scroll right/left to see
more of the fields.

Thanks Dave,

You're a genius. "Detail view, then click the header Name". That solved it.

Isabel,

I've got the drift now. When the View was in "List" there was no heading
"Name"; but when the view was in "Details" the heading "Name" appeared. So
now I can sort in alphabetical order ascending or descending.

Thanks again

Mike.

geo,

There is indeed a a row of headers with "Name, "Size" etc. after I click
"View" / Details. Problem is now solved by clicking "Name".

Thanks to everyone.
