i was told i could:

Alternatively you could download the full install from following link and
install it yourself. Please note the full install download is approx 270 MB
large so for slow connection it would long time
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

but it does say there that this is not the download for personal computers,
a smaller one will come along. anyone else downloading this? i've got a
windows AU 'downloading' permanently doing nothing along the bottom of my
screen.

so... should i, could i, would i?

The text you quote (looks like one of mine actually) allows you to download
the full package, the reason we say a smaller one is coming is that if you
use Auto Update we will only download the files you need for your specific
installation depending on what other patches etc you have installed,, this
may be significantly less then the full package size which can be applied to
a completely clean install of Windows XP with no patches at all (not even
SP1) and will bring it up to full SP2.
Of course the full package also allows you to patch another PCs you have
immediately and also to reapply the patch quickly in the event of a rebuild
unlike the auto update where unless you had some of the required patches
install you may expose an unpatched PC to the internet just to get the
patches you need.

So if you have the bandwidth - it is up to you.

you mean the smart download that only gives you what you
need in the auto update?
who needs sp2 anyway. use another browser and another
firewall and don't open strange attachments.
otherwise wait untill the bugs are out of the update and
order it free on cd from microsoft.com

so this won't clutter my comp with unnecessary space that the 'smaller' sp2
wouldn't do? in the end, it's all the same patches that will be applied?

thanks for your help

Recommended method for upgrading single users/home users is via
Automatic updates. I have read several messages in these newsgroups
where users have reported back that they have downloaded the full
install package from following URL and installed themselves and
reported no problems.

Check out few suggestions in this post:

Does this help?

MICROSOFT'S "Recommended method for upgrading single users/home users is via
Automatic updates."

Common Sense recommends not upgrading to SP2 through another layer of code
that can screw up the install

Download the IT install of SP2.

That full one can be used on any XP system; you can burn it to a CD and
help out family and friends, and retain it should you ever need to
reinstall. The other method via update assesses what items are actually
needed by your specific system and downloads only those - so it is only
useful that one time
