Sony Vaio XP typing jumps and skips letters- please help!

ARgh

My two-year-old sony vaio went mad a month ago and started typing utter
nonsense. I got the keyboard changed for a new one, and things were ok, but
it started skipping letters and jumping (whether I'm in note pad, word,
typing emails, etc.) It just suddenly semi-freezes and skips two or three
letters.

As I use my vaio mainly for writing this is driving me nuts- I'm a pretty
quick typer, but I don't think this can have affected it.

I took it back to the people who changed the keypad the first time, they
changed it again but still no better. If I use a USB keyboard, everything is
fine and it doesn't skip, but I can't type as fast and what a hassle.

So the question is, what do I do now? Online somewhere someone found me
this:

"This is a nice package with wireless and nice compact design and long
battery life. The memory and disk are very good, and the processor quite OK
for most purposes. The keyboard is a little cramped, and the speakers give
sound no better than a mobile phone, which is puzzling for a Sony device.
I am happy with my choice EXCEPT that the keyboard induces random
jumps and characters and unfortunately I have to spend about 30% of my
typing time correcting the errors and adjusting the cursor.

I searched on the web and found, sadly, that this is a problem
experienced by many people with this Sony keyboard. And it appears that
trying to get the problem solved is even more frustrating than the problem.
So if you need series keying than this machine is quite useless. "

Where now? Does anyone have any bright ideas? Know any other newsgroups I
could ask? Surely Sony can't sell people a £1300 laptop or whatever, if the
whole series has such a fundamental flaw that all of a sudden they're a
nightmare to use and you can't even type properly?!

Humph. Well, I'm going to go and try to yell at Sony now, and I'll probably
have to pay 50p a minute or the priviledge, and be in a queue for a month
and a half. GRrrr.

Thanks for any help,
Heather

If your laptop is still under warranty, continue hounding Sony until you get
it repaired to your satisfaction.

If you laptop is not under warranty:

You state that a change of keyboards did not solve the problem, so we are
left with three possibilities:

(1.) The replacement keyboard came from a bad batch (least likely)
(2.) The keyboard controller has a problem / is dying (most likely)
(3.) The driver is buggy (moderately likely)

If the problem is (3.), then Sony will (by now) have recognized that fact
and will have posted an updated driver on its website. Visit the Sony
website -- if you find a new keyboard driver, download and install it. If
your problem goes away, hurray.

If the problem is (1.) you can keep replacing keyboards in hopes of finding
a good one -- an expensive proposition for a laptop not under warranty.

If the problem is (2.) only the manufacturer can effect a repair -- again,
an expensive proposition for a laptop not under warranty.

If your laptop is not under warranty, the only financially viable solution
either to (1.) or to (2.) is to find, and use, an external keyboard that is
comfortable for your typing pattern.
