Sony SDT 9000 SCSI tape drive

I have got a twin processor pc to use as a server runnings XP Professional.
Everthing is fine except the the tape drive will not work, in the device
manager it is shown with an exclamation mark, I have tried to verious drivers
with no luck including ones from Sony, each time I tell the system where the
updated drive is, all that happans is that the system tells me that the drive
is incorrect.

Help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the drive rated for use with Windows XP, or are you just trying to "make"
it work? What does Sony say, not that I would ever believe them again?

It is as far as I know, on the Sony site their is a driver for it, but as I
said the system will not see it.

This is a SCSI, 4mm DAT, 12/24GB tape drive. I use it. Mine is on an Adaptec 2940
controller on SCSI ID 4.

If you have the right SCSI controller driver installed the SCSI tape drive is inherited by
the OS and is XP compatible.

What is the SCSI controller that it is connected to ?

What is the SCSI driver ?

Have you verified all SCSI ID and other jumpers on the controller/and or SCSI drive ?

Is the SCSI chain properly terminated ?

Can you get into the SCSI controller's BIOS routines and can the SCSI controller properly
see the tape drive ?

Have you updated the firmware on the tape drive ? I updated mine to version 0601.

Is that the SCSI controller that the Sony DAT tape drive is connected to ?

Downloaded the drivers - no luck, opened up the PC, this is first time I
have seen inside side it since I got it from Ebay, it appears to have a PCI
SCSi card (un-named) conected to the tape drive.

No SCSI card is "unnamed". There must be some identifiable string on the SCSI card. Most
also have a BIOS routine at POST and will identify itself. Remove the card from the PCI
slot and fully examine it for identification information.

If it is truly unnamed, then I suggest getting an Adaptec AHA-2940 or similar 8-bit narrow
SCSI card. You can also get a wide SCSI card such as the Adaptec AHA-29160. It has
internal/external wide SCSI connectors an internal narrow SCSI connector. Albeit, you'll
probably find a 2940 at cheaper cost.
