Red X on SCSI tape drive in Computer Management

Although the SCSI controller and only device connected to
it (a Sony SDT-9000 DDS3 drive) show up fine under Device
manager, there seem to be problems in Computer
Management. There is a red "X" on the Tape drive and
when checking the properties, the STATE is listed as 'not
present' I have problems writing to the tape when
attempting to run a backup.

I could really use some help on this one. Tried several
things, even pulling out my hair, but to no avail.

Is the Removeable storage service started? You can check by running the
services mmc - start>run>services.msc.
