SONY DVD+RW DW-P50A

My Pavilion notebook was equipped with the Sony CD/DVD
burner and XP Home OS. I upgraded at time of purchase to
XP Pro. My DVD burner will not work and HP told me the
driver is the problem. I have upgraded firmware for
device yet cannot burn discs. Has anyone a clue where to
turn?

XP's built-in burning capability is only compatible with CD burners. You
need to install third party software to burn DVDs. Usually, such software
is provided with the drive. Usually, such software contains the necessary
drivers as well.

I have checked for the possibility, however remote, the
driver which worked with XP Home would not work with XP
Pro. This is the reason HP is giving me for the burner
not working. I have given them the error codes I have
received and they claim it's because of my upgrading of
the OS.

Hi

Well their right, if you purchase a pc with 1 OS and you
upgrade the maker of the pc will not support you on the OS you upgraded
too.

I understand and agree. However, there is no
documentation or evidence that the burner should not work
with the new OS. I went from XP Home to XP Pro, not from
9x or 2K. Even Sony tells me it should work. I wonder if
I should try compatibility mode with 2K.

The upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro should not make any
difference, since the differences between Home and Pro have
nothing to do with burning, except that there may be drivers
that were not carried over when the install took place.
Remove the drive with device manager and reboot, it should
be detected and fresh drivers installed.

And it is true, when you upgrade the OS, you become the OEM
responsible for your tech support.
