DVD-RW problems

I'm using two dvd burners in my XP Pro computer, burning with NERO.
Recently, my drives have stopped acknowledging blank DVD-R's - I try to burn,
it ejects the drive, telling me it needs a +/- R or +/-RW; I put the disc in
again and it doesn't read it. I've tried uninstalling the drives, updating
the drivers and the firmware with no results. Is it time to reinstall
Windows?

Rich, thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't help with blank media. The
drive reads other discs just fine; it simply doesn't want to acknowledge the
blank DVD-R's for burning.

Mike,
When you say you updated the drivers, are you talking about the Nero
drivers..?
The drives should not require any hardware drivers in XP, they should be
plug & play.. What version of Nero are you using..?
Are both drives using UDMA mode 2 in device manager, check the properties
for both IDE primary and secondary channels, advanced tab and see if they may
have slipped into PIO mode..
Are you using any other burning software in addition to Nero..?
Do you have Nero's InCd installed, for use with DVD-RW or CD-RW disks..?

You might look in your Nero Incd folder for the Incd FAQ file for more
troubleshooting tips..

Hi, I have the same problem and have read loads of comments about solving it.
I've got a Sony DVD RW DW-U18A, remedys included reinstaling drivers (
dosent work), flashing firmware (no need), replace drive or have mended
(drive ok).
Loads of remarks about XP not supporting DVD burning, this may be true but
if your PC came with a drive installed there is also third party software
installed, if you have added a drive you should also have installed the
software that came with it, this is also not the problem.
System Restore will work as long as you go back to the original instalation
and then turn off automatic updates, this is hardly acceptable.
After far to much messing about I've got it down to one of Microsofts
critical updates, problem is which one! Microsoft have a fix ( Imapi.sys
5.1.2600.2505 ) but you have to PAY for it from Tech support. Rather than
potentially damage your system trying things that dont work, email Microsoft
and complain

Did you solve the problem? I have the same damn problem on my dell with
a NEC DVD +/- RW (model nd6650A).
Thanks

No I didn't, customer services say it's a tech support issue but they want
£40 before they give you the fix. I'm still talking to microsoft (only just)
but keep geting passed around, I think the fact you are expected to pay is a
customer support issue but they don't see it that way. The fix will be
included in the next service pack for free but that is not until mid 2007,
why it costs now but won't then is along with their admitance they caused the
problem my reason for complaining, I have also emailed computer active with
the problem but have had no response yet! I will leave post if I get any
futher.
