Sony DV camera/firewire - not recognised unless connected on boot

Hi All,
I've just got a Sony TRV19e DV camcorder, and I'm using it with a new
PC I've built around an MSI K7N2G-ISLR motherboard. I'm connecting
via firewire.
I've found that Windows will recognise the camera when connected, and
show it in XP's control panel OK. Moviemaker will also pick it up and
capture correctly provided the camera's turned on before booting. If
you turn it on after boot, Windows notices the device OK but MM 1/2
(and indeed Premiere) hang when you try to capture.

I reinstalled XP about 6 times last night on this (new machine, so
nothing lost here other than time and hair!) and it appears the same
under vanilla XP, SP1, and with all updates...any suggestions?

I'm presuming there's no such thing as a firewire driver for the
camera as it's a standard device. Perhaps it's a weird motherboard
thing?

I've a TRV22e and am having exactly the same problems, in
device manager if I disable the firewire card and re-
enable it finds the camera, but I'm still having major
problems trying to capture the footage, PC always hanging
when the camera is connected.
