Sony DDU1612, XP Freezes when CD inserted

I have a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1612 that when I insert a game
or CD into the drive XP freezes up completely and I have
to restart the computer, not all the time or only with
specific games. It will one time with a game and next
time it won't. Sometimes if a CD is already in the drive
when I start my computer it will freeze XP on startup. I
couldn't find an updated driver, or any driver for the
drive on the Sony site or by a web search. Any
suggestions? Thanks!

Some games, not necessarily old old games, don't always
start when you go to play them. The game start screen or
logo screen will just hang when you try to open it and
the CDROM drive will act as if it is attempting to every
few seconds load whatever it needs from the CD before
handing over to the hard drive. To fix this, go into your
hardware device manager and click on your IDE ATA/ATAPI
Controllers and open the properties of your primary or
secondary IDE channel (whichever is tied to your CDROM or
DVD drive)and under Advanced Settings set your Transfer
Mode to "DMA if available". By default, WindowsXP when
installed will select PIO for your secondary IDE
controller and this typically causes the problems with
older games hanging when you try yo start them.
