sond system

somethings happened to my sound system. when I try and
play a cd a message appears telling me that their is a
problem, that it may be in use by another application or
it is damaged ????????! Ive tried going into the sound
system in the controls but cant find anything!!!!!!!
except in the audio section it says the driver is enabled
but hasnt been started? how do I start it up? there was
no problem with the sound until I was given a cd rom to
reinstall my internet connection, unfortunately that
stuck, and now every time I switch the computer on it
says "cannot find the error file and to delete it from
the registry. Can anyone make sense of this problem
because frankly I,m baffled??????
