Somewhat OT: Looking for an e-mail program...

J

Janus

.... Really, all I want is a simple, plain-text only e-mail
reader/composer, with the capacity to create storage folders as I
specify and maybe an alert when the I have mail. Don't want HTML, don't
need bells and whistles. I've been using Eudora (Light) since almost
the day it came out, but I'm getting tired of the added "features" and
nag notices. Looked at Thunderbird, but it is waaaaaaay more than I
want.

So, I figure this is one place where some security-conscious persons
will be using the program I am looking for. Free is good, but I do not
mind paying to get what I want. Privacy is an issue.

Any recommendations?

Thanks for your time.

Does newsgroups as well. Try the free version.

Pegasus is a good choice. Designed with security in mind. Won't let
users Run attackments. Has is own html rendering which doesn't run
scripts, etc. You can create folders. Used it for many years. It's
free and quite good.

I did change to Mozilla email which is just as secure and good. But I
stuck with Free Agent for newsgroups simply because I'm used to it and
like it. Mozilla has a feature that allows a portion of it to remain
in memory for quick startup, which I like. I create separate icons for
its Navigator and email, and I can bop immediately into either. Works
out nicely since Moz based browsers are also recommended for much
higher security than IE. Best to make one of them your default
browser. Besides Moz, there's Firefox and K-Meleon. Just stay away
from Netscrape :)

I use Eudora Light 3.0.6(32). It's got everything you want - plain
text/no HTML (unless you "copy to browser"), mailboxes/folders,
filters, uncluttered interface, no nags, no ads. I surmise you're
using Eudora Light 5. 3.0.6 is freeware, not adware. With 3.0.6 you
should be able to keep your current mailboxes. Here's one place to get
it: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=eudora.

Pegasus, http://www.pmail.com, is another possibility, though it's got
lots of gee-gaws.

I still also use this version but if the OP's ISP requires him to
authenticate using SMTP-AUTH when sending email, then he will need to
look at some other solutions.

My ISP requires us to authenticate, so I send my email through a machine
running sendmail first that will authenticate with my ISP.

Forte Agent serves as both an excellent newsreader and email client. No
HTML with Agent.

How about a Pre 5x version of Eudora? (no nags)

I've been using Eudora Pro 3.00 for years. It does everything I need. It
has filters, customizable sounds for email received from different people,
address book, you can have multiple accounts, etc.
I see 3.01 is still available at
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=eudora (stolen from "Luke").
I had to pay for mine when I first got it but it's been so long ago I don't
remember how much. It may even be free now... it's downloadable and it
doesn't mention anything about it on the download page.

I've used Eudora 3.xx, 5.xx and 6.xx, and they all rock IMO :)

If you want easy data maintenance, it doesn't get better that Eudora:
- mailboxes kept small by excluding attachments
- messages are safe, can include with data backups
- attachments obviously risky, but can exclude from data location
- attachments exist as files, so can be definitively scanned/fixed
- mail data compatability from 3.xx to 6.xx, both directions (!)
- can rename mailboxes and they still work
- can manage mailboxes and folders from Windows Explorer
- thus very easy to mix in different mail data sets etc.
- no proprietary import/export methods needed if Eudora -> Eudora

But this may miss your privacy requirements. If I can access Eudora's
mail data set, I can drop it into my own Eudora and read everything.

Eudora 3.xx came in "Lite" (free) and paid versions. Eudora 5.xx
onwards (and prolly 4.xx, which I skipped) is one download for "Lite"
(free), Sponsored (free with ads) and Paid (fee, no ads). Sponsored
as all Paid's features except the dedicated spam filtering stuff.

I moved from Eudora 3.xx to 5.xx and later for two reasons:
- new versions quote HTML messages better
- 3.xx "POP account" syntax causes id@blah syntax to fail

On the second; if your POP server is pop.isp.com and you login not as
id but as id@blah, then the "POP account" becomes id@[email protected]
and this mis-resolves to id logging into (e-mail address removed) and fails.
This is fixed in 5.xx and later because it takes as input the logon id
and POP server as separate entities and doesn't screw up.

Eudora's brilliant for safety and data survival, but if your privacy
needs require encrypted storage, then this isn't it.
