something to make a video from stills?

Hello,

Can someone recommend a software that will turn a collection of still
pictures into a short video?

My 12-year-old son wants to make movies. He intends to start by
making a simple video out of stills taken from a digital camera.
Neither he nor I know what we're doing here, but we're willing to
learn.

(I already checked on both Google and pricelessware.org . Nothing
turned up yet. That's probably because I don't know what keywords to
use in the search.)

Thank you very much!

Here's a post on the issue I'm copying from rev.video.desktop.

PhotoLapse can be found here: http://home.hccnet.nl/s.vd.palen

PhotoLapse is a totally free jpg sequence to avi convertor.
It needs no setup and it does not modify your registry.

Everyone has a digital photocamera nowadays so there is
no more excuse of not being able to create your own
timelapse movies.

How?
- Set your digital camera in the lowest resolution
- Pick a subject that changes slow over time (like the clouds)
- Make sure your in a comfortable position and that your
camera is steady
- Take a photo every 10 seconds or so.
- When done making your photosequence download them
to a folder on your pc.
- Start up PhotoLapse and a few clicks later you've got your movie.

Hope you like it,
Stephan van der Palen

SSMM - Slide Show Movie Maker (Freeware)

Slide Show Movie Maker is a free program that can create an AVI-file from a
series of .bmp or .jpg images. Images can have professional-looking fade-in
and fade-out effects, plus attractive text overlays. The program's
clean-looking interface is logically laid out; you should become productive
within just a few minutes of running it. Keep in mind that .avi files can
become quite large and take a long time to render. However, Slide Show Maker
lets you choose to save output using any one of your system's installed .avi
codecs, so the file size and generation time will vary depending upon which
one you choose.

Operating System: Windows 9x, NT, ME, 2000, XP, XP Pro with a resolution
with minimal 1024 x 768 pixel (some controls are not shown at a smaller
resolution)

Import (Images / Videos): 24-Bit BMP, JPG, AVI

Import (Audio): WAV (16-Bit Stereo 44,1 Khz PCM)

Export: AVI (Audio Video Interleave)

Yes, VirtualdubMod can take bmp, gif, jpg, png, tga, and pcx files as
an image sequence. The regular Virtualdub only takes bmp and tga as an
image sequence.
