Something NEW in Lastest Explorer Updates/Patches???

I just got done with my latest round of updating Windows
and Office. I did the Critical updates and then I did the
other updates. I didn't mess with driver updates.
Anyway, in the week or so since I've updated, I
been "attacked" by a flurry of pop-up ads from Microsoft
for all kinds of services and products. This is really
getting annoying. I can be typing in a Word doc and a
window pops up from some partner of Microsoft. Anytime I
go onto the web, there will be 3 or 4 popup ads underneath
my active window, waiting for me. What did the patches
and updates do to me? What is Microsoft doing? Anybody
else notice an increase in popup ads from Microsoft?

Alex, First of all, disable Windows Messenger. Second, and most important, get a good Firewall, such as Zone Alarm, from ZoneLabs.com. They have a free one, but I'd get the one with an ad blocker. I haven't seen a pop up ad since I installed my first ZoneAlarm Pro, two years ago, and what a relief it was! A firewall will block the Messenger ads, too. Good luck.

Go to Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Run Ad-aware and Spybot and note security and other tips on that page.

For the toolbars problem:

My computer is new and everything is going smoothly and over the weekend I
have been getting hit left and right with popup ads, losing my toolbars,
reinstalling them only to lose them again. It's very strange. I have
McAfee firewall installed. I'm trying to figure this out to no avail.
