Something in system processes is using up 100% CPU

Out of the blue, my computer stopped responding. I've got to the point where
I know that something in the system process is using up 100% of the CPU
resource but can't figure out what. If I boot in safe mode, using diagnostic
startup or selective startup with startup items allowed, things seem fine. If
I boot up normally, the pc is pretty much nonreactive once processes are
started. There were no driver updates, installs or anything of the like that
occurred prior to this happening so I'm at a loss.

My system is an Athlon XP Barton 2500, 1GB RAM.
