Some things are worth paying for

But then, weigh the pros and cons. Would I rather have a superior
product at an exhorbitant price or a damn good product for free?

Do I rather need a program that offers function X or can I go without it?
Also, what is an "extraorbitant price"? That differs at well.

So, as you said: Whether or not there is a freeware that does what I want
depends solely on what I want -- thus, one simply cannot say that there is
freeware for "everything one wants".

It's the difference between a 99 cent store and Neiman-Marcus of Tiffany's.

When shopping, price is usually my first predicator. After that it would be
what do I need? Is one or more feature(s) superflous, just adding to my
price? This applies pretty much to anything, from food or medicine to cars.
And software.

I have spent many years (much with help from here) using nothing BUT
freeware, and having nearly total sucess. I think as time goes on less and
less freeware will be available (except open source), since everyone is
tightening their belts and needs the revenue from anywhere it can be had. A
shame, but the seeming model of the Internet for the last 5 years.

The two most pirated pieces of software
(outside of OS's) are MS Office and Adobe Photoshop. The person who
pirates them often "borrows" them from work and installs them at home to
type up resumes, spreadsheets and maybe presentations (Office) and
touching up / morphing photos (Photoshop). That is almost $1000.00 US
on software most of them will never utilize.

If sued for civil copyright infringement, the penalty is up to $100,000
per title infringed. If charged with a criminal violation, the fine is
up to $250,000 per title infringed and up to five years imprisonment.

You are preaching to the choir, if you will parden the pun. I was just
discussing the cost standpoint and brought up the "borrowed" software to
make an example. Teh same idea hold true for those who legally pay that
money for those two pieces of software.

You make a very valid point, one I am trying to convey to those who
still think pirating is ok. Foolish people :)

How much do I want it? I put up with GIMP (for Windows)
when it was a bit flaky. I would not pay for the expensive

alternative. Now GIMP has improved dramatically my needs
have increased but GIMP meets them.

And it was right for YOU. But I know several people who were (and still
are) willing to pay for the alternatives, just because the GIMP does not
offer what THEY want and need. So, neither you nor anyone else can say that
there is "a freeware version of everything one needs".

That's it, burn that strawman.
