some sites work some don't

running XP SP2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180.

some websites work normally but others give me the following error:
"the page cannot be displayed"

With AOL the sites are working.
tried a bunch of different things:
clean history, cookies and all the things that are easily accessible from
the internet options"

check your security settings uner the internet options tab - if the settings
are too high and internet explorer thinks that the page is suspicious it will
not load it

Thank you very much. Unfortunately I tried that too.
I also tried the HOSTS file but nothing showed up...

In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

thanks for your help.
I had tried that too. Iread somewhere that I might need to change the local
security setting for FIPS but I have XP home edition and I cannot reach the
option (control panel --> administrative tools ---> local security settings)
