My System Is Windows XP. Pro

    Hi again

Well.. Lately I've found in the System some unfamiliar Links/Extentions & Application under the name : MAIL IS SAFE ,, So I deleted them and I went on and I Deleted Their Keys and subkeys from the REGISTRY aswell .. But before I did that I made a Restore Point and I made a Registry Back up and I saved it.. SO now after I did that bad move,,,, what happened is that all my : accessories and System Tool's Links buttons and Icons,,, All my EXE,,and Keyboard Short Cuts,,, All My Windows Help Links And Icons,,,,,,Every Thing Changed !!! They are not links any more .. Even the Registry Back Up I made and The System Restore Icon and The Help And Support tabs and all EXE links and Short Cuts They dont open nomore !!!! They Became Like: White Files with 3 colored dots inside !!!!!!! If I can Get To Open The SYSTEM RESTORE WIZARD or The Registery Back Ups That I Made, I would be able to Restore and Back Up every Thing The way It Was.. But How Can I Do That .. I Dont Know How But I'm Sure Someone out there knows how.. So Please Help Me... I'm Afraid to Restart The System Because I Might Lose It All .. At Least Iam Still Connected So I can Get Help On The Net..
Im Glad I had The Link Of This Page Saved on my Favorites .. It worked .. It didn't fail to bring me down here ...
Well Once Again Please Help Me...
    Thanking You

  2. Hi Remay,

Try invoking System Restore from a Command Prompt:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=304449

If that doesn't solve the problem, d/load and run EXE Fix for Windows XP and
Link File Fix for Windows XP (both are on line 12):

    Dear Patt
Thanks well .. command prompt and system restore wouldn't run or open !
I went to that site you refered me to & i downloaded both in line 1
they are on my desktop now but they are not links !! and when i click on any of them i get
the same message i get when i click on any link/icon/button/tab/exe im my start program or
on my disktop in order to open and run any program ...The Message im getting is :
Windows Cannot Open This File ,,
File : Rundll32.exe .. To Open This File Windows Needs To
    Know The Program Created It.
When I Go To Microsoft Windows File Associations Page ,
It Says : File Type Unknown ...
Windows Doesnot Recognize This File Type ...

I Think My Problem is RUNDLL32.EXE .. That Has to Run in the system to enable every thing
associated with to run and open.. because All my EXE,,and Keyboard Short Cuts,,, All My Windows
Help & Support Links And Icons,,,,,,Even The Windows
    Update Link/Page ..
And The cmd.exe.... Every Thing Changed !!! They are
not links any more .. Even the Registry Back Up I made
and The System Restore Icon and The Help And Support
tabs and all EXE links and Short Cuts They dont open
    nomore !!!!
They Became Like: White Files with 3 colored dots
inside !!!!!!! If I can Get To Open The SYSTEM RESTORE
    WIZARD
or The Registery Back Ups That I Made, I would be able
    to Restore and Back Up

Well Thanks Again and Please Follow up with me on this to get it solved
    Have a nice da

  4. If you can open an .scr file (screensaver), rename regedit.exe to
    regedit.scr and then invoke regedit.scr from Start>Run

When the registry editor opens, navigate to here:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>exefile>shell>open>command
Right-click on Default in right pane, select Modify, then modify the Value
    data to:
    "%1" %*

    Next, navigate to here:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>regfile>shell>open>command
Right-click on Default in right pane, select Modify, then modify the Value
    data to:
    regedit.exe "%1"

Please let me know if you were able to do the above. As I have to go to work
now, I won't be back to check this thread for several hours. If you are able
to do the above edits, d/load and go thru the various file association fixes
    here:
    http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

  5. Remay,
I am so glad to hear that you were able to run System Restore from Command
Prompt and regain your system! If I hadn't been so rushed yesterday (had one
foot out the door, ready to go to work, when I sent my last reply to you), I
may have thought to ask if you were trying to run System Restore via command
prompt from within Windows instead of invoking Safe Mode Command Prompt from
the Advanced Options menu outside of the Windows GUI (i.e., by tapping F8
after a restart in order to initiate the Advanced Options menu). Now make
sure you hold on to those instructions and don't throw them in the garbage
again, as you never know when you'll need them next!! :)

    Dear Patti
    Hi Again :) and
    Thanks again
Well ...wether You did tell me about running System Restore via command
prompt from within Windows or by invoking Safe Mode from outside of the Windows GUI (i.e., by tapping F8
after a restart in order to initiate the Advanced Options menu,,, or wether You didnot ..
Please Note That You did it all by giving me the initial and the main guidline of the FIX command i.e
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe to Open and Run System Restore via command prompt.
And that was enough for me to fix the problem and save my system.. You should see what other expert
have told me to do.. some are Microsoft specialists and some are not.. I Posted my problem in many diffrent categories
under diffrents Subjets .. and no one came close to suggest on me the right and the easy way (as You did)..
Well .. All The Credits Go To You
You Brought me back to life ;) lol@me.. I couldn't afford to lose all what i had saved on my system for 4 years now..
You work in this field and You know what i mean.
    Thanks Again
    Have Fun , Enjoy Life
    Bye Bye For Now

    Dear Patt
    Hi Agai
Please and,, if You have time I wana ask You about Few Things

1- About those Windows Xp Association registry Fixes That You've sent me
Can I Load/Register Them into my Registry ?? or there is no need ?? would they change anything in my Registry ?
(To The Better)?? why im asking,, Well because I compared couple of them with my existing Registry entries and
I found that they are diffrent from mine .
*Mine have less info from the ones in Win.XP Association. *Most of mine have this : 'Value is not set' whereas the
new ones's Values are set . etc.. OR ,, as long as the System is running ok I shouldn't bother with them ?

2- In Contol Pannel to the left, under See Also Other Contol Pannel Options There Is Nothing In There !! And ,
In User Accounts main page I dont have all those Submenus Tabs/Links under 'Pick Up A Task' as i used to have a
year ago or so,, I only have three now !! And,, when I Pick My Account Name I find only 4 tasks under
"What You Want To Change.." I Rember that I used to have more !! for EXAMPLE I dont have
' Set My Account To Use A Net Passport'. And ,, to the left Under Realated Tasks I Only Have 4 tasks !! And,,
in 'Add Remove Programs' I only have three Options : Change or Remove Program , Add New Program ,
    Add Remove Windows Component

3- Some Times I get This Error Message: Windows_ Virtual memory minimum too low ... even when I dont have
so many programs loaded ,, most often I get It when i Load The Windows Movie Maker. Well,, I've Got an HP(desktop)
with 857 MHz and 384 MB of Ram , with total size of 28 GB ,, 20 GB out of that still free.

4- When I look for ' Windows Explorer' I Cannot Find It and when I do and I try To Open it , It either takes me to
My Documents Or, It Takes Me To Main Drive C Or, to a Folder named Windows Explorer But there is Nothing in it !! And when i search for it I cannot find It In The System

5- When I right click on any System file,, any Dll File or any Activex File ,and I click on View Dependencies ,,
The Dependency Walker -[asctrls.ocx] opens up.. and in the bottom of Program's Page I see
A warning message in red Says that: Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export
function in a delay-load dependent module. !! and in The main page to the left where all the dependencies are located I can see Only One Item is in Red Color, that is : MPR.DLL ,,, and on the right on the top of the page under PI^ : C in red Color It's Function name is :WNetRestoreConnectionA !
I dont know what is that and why The MPR.DLL is the only one in Red . Is it something to worry about ?

6- And Last .. This One is kind of tricky.. Well I'll try to explain as much as I could -I better do- :) lol@me
Well . It's about the settings and The Look of: My Desktop, My Files& Folders, My Text Documents, My Note Pads
and all Other Programs and Applications... etc... When I browse Or, I Point My Mouse Or I navigate On Any One
Of Those I've Just Mentioned above ,, What Happen is : Let say I have opened : One File/Folder , Microsoft Visual Basics ,,
Internet Explorer , And , One Text Document .. Let Say Iam Typing a note in The Text Document and I have The Mouse Pointer
set on the last word I typed in that Text document where I could see The Cursor is blinking at the last letter of that word I'm Typing ....
Now Let Say I Move The Mouse Pointer out of that page (The Text Document Page ) where Im Typing The Note without clicking on
the Mouse Just moving The Mouse Out Of That Page , and, point it at the Tool Bar or at any other opened File or a Program..
What Happen here is The Cursor disappear and stops Blinking on that word that iam typing in that text document page!!
Well I tried all sort of Mouse,, Keyboard ,Folders, and appearance settings to cahnge that But Nothing worked sofar..
When I log off and i go and log on the Adminstrator Account,, That Problem Is Not There !! even dough both
my Account and The Adminstrator Account have same ettings .

Well I Know I've Got Too Much To Ask For ( Forgive Me For That). I'm Not Sure If You Handle Things Like That..
I Know That You Are A Shell Specialist (which I Dont Know what it Means) ;) lol@me again .. But I wanted To Ask You
anyway .. Well what You Could Help Me With Is Fine With Me.. You've Already Helped Me With The Main Problem
That Saved Me My System (F):):) and No Rush Please Take Your Time.

Thanks and Iam sorry for this long long note..
    Have a Great Day
    Peace and Best Regars

  8. Hello again, Remay :)

    Let's see...........

    1) Since things seem to be running somewhat okay, you can skip them for now.
What those fixes do is set the default associations for those various types
    of files.

    2) When you say "See Also Other Contol Pannel Options", do you mean where it
says "See Also"? If so, look to the right of the bar that highlights "See
Also" to see if there are two small arrowheads there pointing
downwards.......if so, click on the arrowheads and see if that brings up the
options that should be listed there.

By 'Pick Up A Task' I assume you're meaning "Pick a task...". I don't know
what other options you had there previously, as I've only ever had three
options (i.e., Change an account, Create a new account, Change the way users
    log on or off).

Set up my account to use a .Net Passport is probably the only item that is
missing under "What do you want to change about your account?", as you
mentioned that you only have four tasks listed there, and on mine the "Set
up my account to use a .Net Passport " makes up the fifth item.

To the left, under Related Tasks I also have only 4 tasks listed (i.e.,
Manage my network passwords, Prevent a forgotten passowrd, Change another
account and Create a new account). Beneath that is the Learn About category,
with 3 items (i.e., Deleting your own account, Switching users and Using a
    ..NET Passport)

In 'Add Remove Programs' the fourth item, Set Program Access and Defaults
was added in SP1. Perhaps a reinstall of the service pack will correct this,
    or my recommendation for #4.
If you'd like to read a description of this tool, just for interest's sake,
    have a look here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/pla
    tform/Shell/programmersguide/shell_adv/setprogramaccess.asp

    3) Give this a try:
Right-click on My Computer, select Properties>Advanced tab. Click on
Settings button in the Performance section, then Advanced tab, then click on
the Change button in Virtual memory section. Click in the radio button
beside "Custom size", and key in the Initial size of 1.5x the amount of RAM
you have (576) and make the Maximum size 3x the Initial size (1728), then
click on the Set button. Click on OK, then Apply (if enabled), OK, OK.

    4) You could give this a try:
Go to Start>Run and key in SFC /SCANNOW <ENTER>
Have your XP install CD in the drive, as you'll be requested for it. This
scans protected files and replaces corrupted/missing files with "fresh"
    files from the install CD

    5) Sounds like that is not a problem........have a look here:
    http://www.dependencywalker.com/faq.html
    Check out the second Q&A.

    6) I don't have a quick answer for that one.

I worked all evening, so it wasn't such a great day, lol, but I'm off now
until Friday night, so that's okay.

    Patti MacLeod

    Dear Patt
    Hi again :
    Thanks agai
    Well .

    1- Asfar as number 3 : I did the Virtual memory : I selected Custom Size 576 and 1728 ,, But,
In Visual Effect what should I select : Let Windows Choose ?? Best Appearance ,, Best Performance ,
Or, Custom?? And Should I check all those under Custom ?? Or What ?? and Under Advanced ,,
should I select Programs ?? Or Background & System Cache?

    2- Asfar as number 4 : SFC /SCANNOW in Run O
I insert the Windows XP Professional C
into your CD-ROM Drive CD-ROM Drive M. I ran it four times ,, each time takes a long time!! and
Every time the Indicator gets to almost half the Distance I get this
Insert yor Windows XP Professional And When Click on try again I get this
The CD You Provided is the wrong CD !! Please insert the Windows XP Professional CD-RO
into your CD-ROM Drive when I click on more INFO I get this
Possible reasons: *1- You Have Inserted the wrong CD.*2- The CD-ROM is Not Functionin
    I also Tried CD-ROM Drive N I've got Same Results !
My Original OS was Windows ME , then I upgraded it To Windows XP Home Eddition. Then, T
Windows XP Professional... My CD-ROM is working Fine and, i'm sure of that.

3- Asfar as Item 1 Regarding the Association/Registry.. and if You don't mind I wana know which is better for me?
Because I Think My Registery Entries are messed up !! EveryTime I Use Registry Cleaner I find many Over 100 hav
Either: USLESS EMPTY KEYS OR USLESS EMPTY EXTENTION OR FILE..... DOESNOT EXIST So I CLICK ON FIX .
But ,They Get Deleted and next time I use The Registry Cleaner I see Them There Again ,,same ones !

4- Asfar as number 6 It's OK Take Your Time

For The Rest Thank You Much I Did What You Told Me and every thing is fine now Thanks (F

Sorry To Keep Bothering You.. Especially That You Work Hard . God Bless You . Please Don't Reply Same Day
Take Your Time .. When Ever You Have Free Time

Thanks Again and Please Dont Work Hard :

  10. 1 - In Visual Effects, I have opted for Best Performance and under Advanced,
I have opted for Programs for both Processor scheduling and Memory usage

2 - You could give this a try and see if it solves the "wrong CD" problem
    when running SFC /SCANNOW:
Go to Start>Run and key in secpol.msc <ENTER>
In the left pane, expand "Local Policies" then click on "Security Options"
In the right-hand pane look for "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally
logged-on user".....Disable it if it's not already disabled by
right-clicking on it, selecting Properties, then clicking in the radio
button beside Disabled. Click on Apply then OK, then go to File>Exit.

If that doesn't work, navigate to this key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Setup
In the right-hand pane, under Name, locate SourcePath and then check to see
what it says for that under Data column.......does it point to your CDROM
drive by stating M:\ or N:\?

Check the same as above in this registry navigation:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion

3 - Those set the defaults for various file associations. If you have any
customizations, they would be lost. If you're willing to give that a chance
(it's hard for me to say what's better for you to do.......wish I could tell
you), then go for it, I say :)
