Some Junk Mail Images Coming Through

S

Steve Zimmelman

Recently some Junk-Mail images have been automatically displaying.

The HTML used to display the image is something like:

<IMG SRC="cid:[email protected]" border="0" ALT="">

Is this preventable or a hole in the way Outlook blocks images?

TIA,
-Steve-

It's not a hole - the messages are attached to the message. The only way to
prevent it is to always read mail in plain text.

My concern too, is that since outlook can not block or delete this SPAM, the
imbedded HTML could contain a NASTY that would
attack your PC. I have tried setting a rule that accepts mail only addressed
to me, however somehow they even get around that!

We need an option to send all non listed "addressbook" entries to Junk and
then only show the title in the Junk folder so we do not ever actually open
the stuff.
That way we chose to read it or not. Currently it all goes into the inbox,
and changing to "Text" only is archaic!

No, not when it's included in the message.

So the image can't be used to verify if I've read/received the email? That
would be my main concern.

What version of outlook do you have? You can configure ol2003's junk mail to
only trust people in your address book or safe list (Safe lists only
option).

Note that fully updated versions of outlook, except outlook 98, are quite
safe and require users intervention to trigger 'nasties'. Opening messages
is slightly less safe than using the preview pane - the preview pane has
tighter restrictions on what can run (except in Ol98).
