Some Front Page Fodlers Not Visible in "Folder List"

B

Brendan

I have seen this question before but not received an answer. If I open
frontpage and view the folders on the left, only about 1/2 of the folders are
actually showing. Thus, there are folders that are not visible. However,
you can clearly see them in Windows Explorer. You can also see them from the
File Open or Instert Image or any other navigation type box. It is just the
"Folder List" where there are some missing folders. I downloaded and ran the
FPCleaner, re-calcualted Hyperlinks, and Refreshed but they are still not
showing up.

Because they probably do not exist *within* your FP web site OR they are
hidden files - what are the file names?

Open FP
File | Open Site (or Web)
to open your Site properly...NOT File | Open

You say "half the folders". The "missing" folders may be those with
names starting with _vti_
These folders are ALWAYS hidden in FrontPAge and must not be edited in
any way, or FrontPAge may cease to function in the web site.

Other folders that are *always* hidden in FrontPage are: _derived,
folders named similar to pagename_files
Other Folders with names beginning with an underscore (except _private)
may also be hidden, but can be shown using
Tools->Site (or Web) Settings - Advanced Tab, and tick the box "Show
hidden files and folders". Note that the folders mentioned above are
permanently hidden in FrontPage.

I am opening the "Web". Here is a link so you can see what I am talking
about. The folders drop off after the "codec" folder.

Ok, first off, you are not articulating yourself well at all. You need to
be SPECIFIC and EXPLICIT about what you are seeing or think is wrong, or you
will have to resort to an image (as you had to). Your first several posts
were so vauge that they forced people to make guesses. (Correct ones, but
guesses are not as good as certainties.)

Ok, answers

1) There are always hidden folders in FrontPage. STOP LOOKING AT WINDOWS
EXPLORER YOU CAN ONLY DAMAGE YOUR SITE DOING THAT. So, just close the
freaking window and forget about it. Typically those are the _vti_ folders,
but also any folder you name with an _ in front will get hidden by default.
You can set if you see SOME of them in the web site properties through
Frontpage. There is NOTHING you can do in them that will not damage stuff.
Let FrontPage manage them and forget about them

2) The "Default_HTM_Files" folders are the result of the Windows/Internet
Explorer odd behavior of "managing" HTML files with Internet Explorer.
Typically those folders will contain images, CSS files, and JS files used in
the file they are named after. At some point, you dragged and dropped those
parent files, or went to "save as" from Internet Explorer and those folders
were created. They are marked hidden by the operating system, and using
them can be turned on and off via IE settings and visibility by the "Folder
Settings" in Explorer. THESE ALSO YOU SHOULD NOT TOUCH. Though, you did
something wrong at some point to create them.

Clean up your file creation processes and learn how IE handles HTML files so
those folders are no longer created when you edit your web, and sit down
look through the FrontPage files if you are curious THEN FORGET THEY EXIST.

Comparing the folder lists upto MS-Word-Docs, the lists are exactly what
I would expect - the missing folders on the FrontPage list are:
Folder named _derived
Folders with names starting with _vti
Folders with names ending with _files

All these folders will be permanently hidden in FrontPage, as mentioned
in my previous post.
The folders with names ending in _files are taken to be part of a
thicket (whether that is how they were created or not).
See http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/thickets.htm for an explanation
of how these folders are usually created.

In your answer #1 - STOP LOOKING AT WINDOWS EXPLORER YOU CAN ONLY DAMAGE YOUR
SITE DOING THAT. Not true. I am looking to compare what folders are there.

In your answer #2 - "Though, you did something wrong at some point to create
them." - So you have a solution since I have not changed anything for the
last 5 years and opened the web as usual? Or are you just hear to blow your
own horn? As you can see, I posted a screen snapshot (link) and the FP
hidden files are not the ones I care about at all.

I was specific on what I have done to try to remedy the problem so other
persons who respond would not have to waste there time. I was also specific
in my question. Maybe you read another post and are responding to it, when
in reality, mine is pretty self explanatory: I can see ALL of my FP folders
in WINDOWS EXPLORER but some are missing when I view the FP "Folder List". -
Bam!!! A one sentence description of the problem!

Now that we have determined that the FP hidden folders are not the
folders/directories that are the ones that I can't see, nor do I have any
desire to see or modify those folders, do you have a possible solution? Horn
blowing can be done somewhere else.

As a possible solution, I created a new “blank†web and imported the
files/folders from my current web into it but I still can only see certain
folders.

Thanks for you quick resopnse. Can I rename them for a "true" view of my
folder list? I like being able to see all of the folders, regardless.
Thanks, Brendan

No, *don't* rename them, or you'll render them useless.
You may like to be able to see all folders, but sometimes life doesn't work
that way. I'd like to be a millionaire, but I'm not going to make it.

Either accept the correct advice you've been, or do as you wish, and don't
expect any further help when you toast your web or FrontPage.

"Either accept the correct advice you've been, or do as you wish" - Now it is
an ultimatum? Who said I am trying to “toast†my website? I am just trying
to figure out why those folders are not visible. I did not know if they
could be made visible or what the reason what that they were not showing up.
Some of you guys are wound too tight and need to remember that not everyone
has the in depth knowledge that you possess.

Yes, with some work - change _files to -files. Do this in Windows
Explorer with FrontPage closed.
Then Open FrontPage and the web, and run Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks
(always recalculate hyperlinks when doing something to the web contents
outside FrontPage).

Then View->Reports->Problems->Hyperlinks and repair the broken links.

Hi,

I do understand why Frontpage is not displaying these particular folders in
the FP. I am having an issue b/c when I created a new page, FP created some
files that are in the _derived folder, and I need to publish them for them to
view on the website. Any tips? An example of the "missing links" are at
www.southsidemibor.com/bowl-a-thon

Any ideas how I can access these files to publish them, so the pictures show
up?

Thanks!

R

Ronx

The site does not appear to have FrontPage extensions installed, so you
have two choices:

1) Publish the whole site (changed pages only) using the FrontPage
publish feature (File->Publish Site and choose FTP and type in the FTP
location in the form ftp://example.com)

2) Use an FTP client to publish the site or individual files. Since the
_derived folder is normally hidden in Windows as well as in FrontPage,
you may have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files/folders - some
FTP clients use the Windows Explorer settings.

If the site had FP extensions installed, then use option 1) above, but
choose FrontPage extensions site, and use an http:// location.

The _derived folder is the only folder in FrontPage that is hidden and
may contain files to be published. The only way to publish those files
within FrontPage is to publish the entire web site (either all pages, or
Changed pages only).

Thank you sooo much! I found a box that says to show hidden folders (tools,
site settings, advanced), and checked it. This showed me most of the folders
I wasn't able to see, but still wouldn't show me the _derived folder. So, I
re-synched the local & remote websites. Seemed to take care of the problem.

Thank you for your help!
