Some Fonts Don't Work in Win2k

I recently got a new computer running Windows 2000 Professional and put my old computer running Windows 98 SE downstairs for my kids to use and connected it to our home network.

I copied all of my fonts from the old to the new and find that some of them don't work on the W2k machine.

I've tried re-installing them from the disks with the same results. I've never had this problem before going from Win 3.1 to 95 to 98 to 98 SE. I thought the fonts were supposed to work the same on all versions of Windows.

What say ye?

Were they TrueType fonts? Adobe Type fonts? It's been maybe 3 years since
I used any Adobe fonts, but I'm wondering it you need to install their ATM
(Adobe Type Manager). Adobe OpenType fonts (an extension of the TrueType
SFNT format)? Whose fonts?

Yes they are TrueType Fonts. I got some from some graphics programs I use by Serif Inc and some from a CD ROM called Total Fonts2000 which says it has has over 5000 TrueType Fonts

If I install them using their installer, they just never show up in the Fonts folder. If I try to copy them from my old computer Windows says the file is damaged. It can't be damaged because it worked perfectly in Win98 on 3 different computers.

Did the vendor of the fonts pile up all the font files into one specialty
file that must be unpacked by their installer? Or is there a folder on the
CD where are the font files? If the font files are available on the CD then
just the link to the aforementioned KB article to navigate to that folder
and install them. When you have the Fonts folder open and use the File
menu, once you browse to the folder with all the fonts then it will read
them all, add them to a listbox, and you can select which or all to install.
If you don't need to use the vendor's installation program then don't. It
obviously doesn't work on an NT-based version of Windows (it's probably
copying the files to a holding folder where you're expected to then install
them from or it is copying the font files to the wrong path and which is not
used for fonts on an NT-based version of Windows).

In short, browse around the CD to see if you can find a folder with all the
..ttf and .fon font files. Then just use the standard method within Windows
to browse there again, select the fonts you want, and install those. Don't
use the installation program on the font CD if you don't have to.
