Did a clean install of xp pro my computer is running
great. Now I need a software program that will keep my
computer clean from spyware. I have a cable internet
connection all the time. I have SP2 loaded on my computer
the firewall in SP2 is it good enough to protect my
computer on the internet connection? Is there another
firewall that works better than the one in SP2? Someone
told about zone alarm pro 5 have never used it and will
it work with SP2 firewall or does one need to be
shutdown? The spyware software someone told me about pest
patrol never used it, must be easy to use. It does not
matter if the software cost just need one to protect my
computer and I know not one will do the job on spyware

Hi

The XP Firewall doesn't monitor outgoing access to the Internet from you PC.
You will need to install a 3rd party Firewall to achieve this. ZoneAlarm is
available as a free product or a 'pay-for' product - ZoneAlarm Pro. Then
you can disable the SP2 Firewall - running two applications of the same type
at the same time may cause conflicts. The latest version - 5.1.011.000 -
works with Win XP.

Pest Patrol is bad, in my opinion, one time I used it, killed the "spyware" and
windows stopped working. Had to restore to the previous day. Whew.

Best combo, I think:
Ad Aware 6
Spybot Search and Destroy
Norton AntiVirus
BHODemon
XP Firewall
Opera Browser

Run Ad Aware and Spybot every couple days and you should be good against 99% of
the stuff out there as long as you keep them all updated.

Ad Aware doesn't catch everything, which is why I also use Spybot, though
sometimes Spybot will hang on you in the final cleanup stage.

BHODemon will catch most of the browser helper crap that you can get tagged with
sometimes..

I originally used Opera for it's built in pop up blocker that you can turn on,
though with SP2 now IE also has the capability, BUT it's more annoying in IE
since it usually pops up the "do you want to block etc this page" yada yada, so
i think Opera or Firebird by Mozilla are still the best choice for IE and they
don't have the constant supply of security holes that microsoft has to keep
fixing.

It will take some time to know much about spyware,it also takes more than
one program for each one scans for something alittle different.
Pest Patrol is a very good program but Ad-Aware and Spybot are good as well
and free. I suggest those two as well as spywareblaster. Also download the
LSP-fix and keep it somewhere on your system incase you need it at a later
time.

Sometimes, when you remove malware it will stop your TCP/IP
stack from working (Internet connection).
Winsock or LSP-fix will correct the problem,Download first.
Note to anyone using NOD32 Anti-Virus software,Do Not delete the
"imon.dll" this fix reports,That is your e/mail scanning engine.

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

WinXP's built-in firewall is adequate at stopping incoming attacks,
and hiding your ports from probes. What WinXP SP2's firewall does not
do, is protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you (or someone
else using your computer) might download and install inadvertently.
It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at all, other than to check for
IP-spoofing, much less block (or at even ask you about) the bad or the
questionable out-going signals. It assumes that any application you
have on your hard drive is there because you want it there, and
therefore has your "permission" to access the Internet. Further,
because the Windows Firewall is a "stateful" firewall, it will also
assume that any incoming traffic that's a direct response to a
Trojan's or spyware's out-going signal is also authorized.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even the commercially
available Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall is superior by far,
although it does take a heavier toll of system performance then do
ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

The XP firewall will keep the worms out, but a third party
firewall will protect both in and outbound and log the
traffic.
I run Zone Alarm (free version) and Ad-Aware SE Personal
(free) and SpyBot S&D (free), SpywareBlaster (free) and from
Camtech2000 SpySites and CookieSpy (both also free) [You'll
notice I like free software]. I do run McAfee Virus Scan
100% of the time.
The user and their surfing and email habits also have a lot
to do with how clean the computer is kept.

You've gotten some excellent advise here. Just to add one thing. Pest
Patrol is excellent software, not withstanding one posters bad
experience. I would recommend it, but it's not free.

Yeah, that was me.. got it with ZoneAlarm.. ran it without even thinking
anything bad would happen.. true, it may be excellent in your experience, but
why run the chance that your spyware remover will remove something windows xp
needs to run correctly.. I've never had the slightest problem with ad-aware, and
other than hanging sometimes on cleanup, Spybot S&D is also error free..

Also the price alone would drive me to AdAware and Spybot.. why in the world pay
money for something when you can get something just as good or better for free?

Any of those programs can remove something it shouldn't. You just
haven't experienced it. Most make a backup of what was removed to
reverse it. Pest Patrol has worked flawlessly for me for several years.

I've tested Pest Patrol twice and both times got numerous false positives.
The most recent, most serious was 98se's Sysedit.exe. This on a machine
regularly scanned with multiple AVs, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, and using
Spywareblaster. Pest Patrol clearly works ok for some - perhaps the
majority - due to the no. of recommendations from obviously competent users,
but it sure as hell FP's a lot more than the others mentioned. I would
assume a no. of users who remove non-malware at it's behest but who don't
see obvious consequences.
