Software to manage the old T700 UPS on a new Dell server?

M

M Skabialka

We had an old HP/Compaq server which used an APC Smart-UPS T700 for the
battery backup. It used "Power Management Software with Lansafe III and
Failsafe III".

The server died, we got a new Dell.

The T700 is still the battery backup but when the battery runs out the
server crashes because there is no management software installed.

What management software is there for the T700 that will work on a Dell
PowerEdge 2600 on Windows 2000 to control the server and shut it down
properly when battery power has reached the lowest level able to sustain the
server?

Thanks,
Mich

An APC Smart-UPS will normally come with PowerChute software. If you don't
have this then I think (but haven't tried it) that you can download it from
the APC website - although you may need to register for this.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, the UPS is a Compaq T700, before that we had the APC!
The software is "Power Management Software with Lansafe III and Failsafe
III", not Power Chute which is for the APC.

On this site it doesn't list non HP products as being supported:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/11102.html

So what other software would manage this Compaq T700 UPS so I don't have to
buy a new UPS when the batteries work fine for an hour or so?

Thanks

Have you looked at the built in help file?

Goto Start
Help
click the Index tab
type Power Otions, UPS
press enter

gives

configuring a simple UPS

"To configure a simple-signalling UPS
Open Power Options in Control Panel.
On the UPS tab, click Configure.
In the UPS Interface Configuration dialog box, set the UPS signal
polarities as appropriate for:
Power Fail/On Battery
Low Battery
UPS Shutdown
Caution
Before changing these settings, see the documentation that came with
your UPS.

As a humble lower member of a domain tightly controlled by others, I was
unaware that a UPS could be controlled through Windows, assuming the
manufacturer provided the interface. I will ask the Domain gods to try this
for me.

I was given temporary privileges to do this but find myself at a screen I
don't know the answers for:

Windows Server 2000 requires the signal polarities for Power fail/on
battery, Low battery and UPS shutdown.

I have a 48 page manual I downloaded from HP, and all of the original
documentation. None of these states whether the polarity should be negative
or positive for Power fail/on battery, Low battery or UPS shutdown, and I
don't want to hazard a guess, figuring that in itself may be hazardous.

I am unable to find such information on the internet, and HP does not
recognize this as an item they still support.

Can anyone help me to find out the correct answers to these polarity
questions for a Compaq T700 UPS on Windows Server 2000?

Thanks,
Mich

Just try either.

It may be working - I left them all at the default setting of postive, and
Control Panel does recognize that we are on AC power when I set up the
generic UPS. I haven't pulled the power to see what would happen as a test
yet.

Thanks for the help.
