Software to Convert .wmv to mpeg1?

C

Carolyn

I have been trying to make a movie with transitional effects out of my jpg's
from my digital camera using the Windows Movie Maker software. It appears
that it will only save the movie in the .wmv format and that I will have to
convert it to mpeg1 format to use VCD Easy and burn it to a CD that can be
read by a DVD player (Whew! that was a long sentence).

Is there any free software out there that can do this? Am I going about
this in the correct manner if I want to make movies out of digital photos?
Thanks for any advice, I am really new to this kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure that TMPGEnc will do this. you can get it form
http://www.tmpg-inc.com/ scroll down the page and it's on the right hand
side of the page near the bottom. It is freeware.

It looks like this program will convert avi's into mpeg's. It doesn't seem
to convert wmv's to mpeg's unless I am missing something. I might have to
go this route but then I won't be able to use my Movie maker software.

I forgot to mention before, if you are using Windows XP Microsoft photostory
3 would so what you require and Microsoft are giving it away for free! You
get it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

That looks like a great program but you have to have Windows Media Player 10
installed or it won't install on your computer.
There was a reason that I did not want to install Media Player 10 but I
cannot remember what it was. Wasn't it apt to phone home and had a some
restrictions when playing mp3's? I am running Media Player 9 right now and
am hesitant to upgrade if there is some weird stuff in version 10.

Have a look at AsfTools and VirtualDub. I assume they will help you out
somehow.

Carolyn,
TMPGEnc will convert wmv files just fine. Use the wizard, when you get to
"select source file", click the browse button by the "video file", change
"files of type" to "all files(*.*)" and browse to the wmv file you wish to
convert or you can drag and drop the file onto "select source file" dialog.

Hi Carolyn
TMPGEnc will do what you want. Open the program, select PAL click next
select video file, browse to where your file is stored, select all files in
the file types box, then click on the file you want to convert ignore the
fact that it is shown as a black square then click on open. It will then
open it start to process it.
Good luck.
Incidentally, I have been using Windows Media player 10 with no apparent
problems. The PhotoStory 3 program is excellent for your purpose. You still
have to convert from WMF but it really is worth the effort.

The site suggests that WMP10 is only required for mobile based devices.
However, the prog does require Windows Genuine Activation Validation.

Isn't the PAL format not for use in the U.S.? That is where I live.
Can I upgrade to Media Player 10 without installing service pack 2?

I actually tried to install the Windows Photo program and the installation
stopped because it said that I did not have WMP10 on my computer. That made
me mad. I am going to call Microsoft this morning and see if there is any
way around this one.
I believe that it was someone on this group who had warned me about some bad
things in WMP10 but cannot remember what they were.
One great thing about the Windows Photo program was the fact that it gave
you the ability to pan your photos (like that Civil War documentary). I
have not been able to find this particular ability in any other software so
far.

I just tried using TMPGEnc per your instructions and it worked. Thanks for
the help. I will try to burn my movie onto a CD and test it in my DVD player
today.
Now the only thing that I feel bad about is the panning technique that is
included in the Microsoft Photo program. I will have a look around in my
Movie Maker software but I don't think that it can do that.
I just got my digital camera for Christmas, so all this is very new to me.
I am quite amazed at what I am able to do with my pictures now and cannot
understand why we didn't get into this sooner. I always seem to be the last
person to pick up on new technology.

They can only convert to avi, if they can.

Sure. But AsfTools is a good thing to have about if you are working with
wmv's, and VirtualDub can make avi's out of jpg's

Sorry Caroline, you are right PAL is not used in
America. With regard to your other question, it appears that Windows Media
Player does not need SP2 to run. See system requirements at

Thanks for the link. Now I remember what was wrong with media player 10,
someone on this group had pointed out that it included DRM. I have been
looking around and cannot figure out how this would affect my computer, my
mp3's and whether I can physically stop this version from calling home.
Version 9 is bad enough that I have to set up my firewall to stop it from
getting outside, even after adjusting all its program settings to not auto
update, connect to the net etc.
I also have no interest in the shopping, downloading crap that comes with
it. I just want to play my music and be done with it.

Carolyn,

From various inet newfeeds & Microsoft. the DRM in WMP 10 and above will
ultimately work to prevent *ANY* illegally obtained media (mpg,mp3,etc) from
playing or being burnt from your computer.

If you right-click several of your current mp3 songs in your current WMP 9,
select properties, you'll see a license tab. Click on that. If it says "license
backup not allowed" or such similar restriction, future versions will restrict
what you can do with it.

Currently WMP 9 will still allow burning of copyright material. Apparently WMP
10 & future versions will correct that error.

Ultimately, according to RIAA and such organizations, they want Windows DRM to
prevent the ASPI layer from recording and prevent windows from sending it out
over the internet.

They have high hopes but I doubt it'll ever happen that way. Too many open
source projects exist to prevent DRM from ever being 100% successful )

I checked around 20 of my mp3's and there was nothing in the license
section. Am I going to have to check every one of them before I can be sure
that they would all transfer to version 10 with no problems?
It is beginning to sound like a whole lot of work and worry just to get a
free photo slideshow program from Microsoft.)

Quite.

Have a look at VirtualDub which will take your jpg's and make an avi
file out of them.
Then convert the avi to your required format.

I don't see anything in WMP 10 that you need )
If your current version plus the HUGE assortment from the [PL] sites work....
why upgrade ? You are NOT forced to use the new version. You can go into the
update page & select to hide that particular update.
