Software to Convert .wmv to mpeg1?

Sure. But AsfTools is a good thing to have about if you are working
with wmv's, and VirtualDub can make avi's out of jpg's

So what? The OP didn't ask for that.

Our interpretations differ in respect of this statement in the original
post:

"Am I going about
this in the correct manner if I want to make movies out of digital
photos?
Thanks for any advice, I am really new to this kind of thing."

from playing or being burnt from your computer.

I've yet to see a definitive statement claiming the above will happen.
9, select properties, you'll see a license tab. Click on that. If it says
"license backup not allowed" or such similar restriction, future versions will
restrict what you can do with it.

In WMP options I've always unchecked "Acquire licenses automatically
for protected content" and am careful about letting WMP phone home.
I've never seen the licensing statement mentioned above.
WMP10 & future versions will correct that error.

Speculation? Will WMP10 prevent other apps from burning?
DRM to prevent the ASPI layer from recording and prevent windows from
sending it out over the internet.

So nothing really to worry about then?
I checked around 20 of my mp3's and there was nothing in the license
section. Am I going to have to check every one of them before I can be sure
that they would all transfer to version 10 with no problems?
It is beginning to sound like a whole lot of work and worry just to get a
free photo slideshow program from Microsoft.)

Looks like you're working overtime creating paranoia against WMP10.
Before banishing a useful software from your arsenal it's best to do
your own research first. Why don't you take the time to read the
Microsoft site regarding WMP10? At worst you can use System Restore or
Total Uninstaller to go back to WMP9. From my experience, all your
doubts regarding WMP10 are unfounded. A previous poster stated that
you had to submit to the Windows Genuine Activation Validation process
to download WMP10, but that's untrue too. Don't fall prey to baseless
speculation.
One great thing about the Windows Photo program was the fact that
it gave you the ability to pan your photos (like that Civil War
documentary). I have not been able to find this particular ability
in any other software so far.
Carolyn

There are plenty of payware apps that can do pan-and-scan, and some
implement it with much more versatility and ease than PhotoStory.
