SOFTWARE SLOW RESPONSE

WE HAVE A DELL DEMENSION 2400 JUST PURCHASED TWO WEEKS
AGO. HAVE LOGGED IN 2-3 CALLS TO DELL REGARDING VERY SLOW
RESPONSE TO ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS. IT IS NOT AN
INTERNET PROBLEM. DELL'S TECH SUPPORT PEOPLE HAVE TRIED
TO HELP BUT EVERYONE I HAVE SPOKEN TO SPEAKS VERY POOR
ENGLISH AND I FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND ALL
THAT IS SAID.
WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS ON DESKTOP CLOSE SLOW LIKE A SHADE
BEING PULLED DOWN. ALSO VERY SLOW RESPONSE WHEN MOST
WINDOWS OPEN.
I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD CALL MICROSOFT FOR TECH HELP BUT
ON A TWO WEEK OLD COMPUTER I DON'T FEEL IT IS NECESSARY
TO PAY FOR HELP.
IF I HAVE TO SEND THIS COMPUTER BACK BEFORE THE 13TH OF
THE MONTH I WILL. BUT MAYBE SOMEONE OUT THERE CAN TELL ME
WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.
ALSO WE ARE GETTING ERROR MESSAGES ON THE ADVANCED SYSTEM
INFORMATION PAGE. WE WERE TOLD BY DELL ON THE 25TH THAT
THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED THAT NIGHT AND WE HAVE GOTTEN AT
LEAST 6 ERROR MESSAGES SINCE THEN.
THANKS TO ANYONE WHO HAS SOME IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.
 
Looks to me you have a video problem. Did you check if
the correct video drivers have been installed?
 
Welcome as a new computer user. Your tech support is
through Dell and these newsgroups. It is considered
impolite to post using all caps, it is called shouting and
is rather rude.

The 2400 is shipped with only 128 MB of RAM memory and this
is a very minimal amount. You will speed up operation if
you go to the nearest computer store and buy a 256 MB RAM
(probably about $30-50) and if you take the computer in a
good shop will show you how to install it and what is really
inside your new Dell. If they won't let you watch, find a
techie computer shop that will. That may be your best
source in the future [but they might charge a little more
than a discount chain].

You may have contracted some virus or spyware already while
using your computer on-line, this is common with new users
because you have not yet learned how to protect your
computer. There are programs you can download for free that
will check and clean out the bad stuff.

SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org is
very good. Also, Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com is good
and seems to be updated a little more often. I run both.

You need to have a firewall running anytime you are on-line
to hide your computer from the outside world of hackers and
worms. Windows XP has a basic firewall which you must turn
on [it is off by default, this will be changed in the near
future] but most people think the free version of Zone Alarm
www.zonelabs.com is better.

If you have some versions of Internet Security such as
Norton, they can slow down operation. You might need to
check settings and be sure to get any updates on those
programs.

Sounds like a display issue. Try System Properties> Advanced> Performance>
Settings. On the Visual Effects page, select "best performance" and see if
that helps.

We have no idea what errors you are talking about.

Hi, I have a hyundai that was purchased at christmas and
am having the same problem(bad english and everything)My
computer was taken away after sadly dying a horrible
death and had the RAM replaced to now begin to get sick
again. It was relaced because of the RAM running at one
speed and the hard drive was for some reason running at
another.
we were told that this may have been a manufacturing
fault but we do believe the problem is beggining to
sicken our computer again.
