software search engine does NOT FIND FILES

Hi and thank you for looking at my post, my first.

I thought it was because I disabled the Indexing Service, but after enabling
it, the problem remains.

My O/S is Windows XP Home Edition SP2 with all MS updates to date.

Clicking - - Start / Search For Files or Folders / and using the option
"Search for files or folders named:" does NOT FIND FILES, and the list is
growing EXCEEDINGLY LONG.

WHY???
