Please help, I have software that was designed for
windows 95 or 98. When I try to load it on xp , it gives
me a prompt to download nt service pack 4. When I
download and try to install - it won't work. Any ideas?

Install NT, then install SP 1, SP 2, SP 3 then SP 4.

Why would you think that a SP for NT would work on XP? After all they are different OSs.

Yes. Get a magic wand and perform the "98TOXP"
spell.

DO NOT try to install any service pack like that, other than the one
(SP1a) *specific* to Windows XP.

Usually with such things the installation program is not recognising the
system as being one it expects. So it gets the idea it is an NT type,
but sees no reference to service packs.

Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories and run Program Compatibility
wizard. Point it to run the software's setup program, and tell it to
pretend to be NT4 with Service Pack (can't remember if it offers 4 or 5
but either will do). Or to pretend to be Win 98

Once installed, you may also need to find the item in start - All
Programs that runs the program; r-click it - Properties - Comparability
page and tell it do also run (always) in that mode
