Software DVD decoder for XP-Suggestions?

Could anyone recommend a software DVD decoder for XP/Windows Media
Player-preferably a free reputable one?

After I upgraded to XP, my DVD-decoder card is no longer recognized (Upgrade
Advisor warned me of this in advance at least-as my only hardware issue);
I’ve read people in this situation turn to DVD decoder software or in the
case of the notebook in question (Inspiron 7000-has the VRAM listed on XP sys
requirements) was the subject of the following article as the practical
example where the author had to use Win2K drivers for both the DVD
decoder+Sound Card combo to make it work in XP:

http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-5035047.html (Newer isn't always
better when it comes to Windows XP drivers)

I’d like to try a software DVD decoder for XP/Windows Media Player
(preferably a free reputable one:) before replacing XP sound card drivers
with 2K drivers as I don’t have confirmation on long term outcome there?
Anyone have experience/recommendations here?

Too bad XP doesn’t include one by default with Windows Media Player..
–Thanks group
