Software distribution service 2.0

After installing the software distribution service 2.0 I have not been able
to run powerpoint, it works again after doing a system restore, but since
automatic updates are turned on every few days since 14 of june I have ha to
make a restore just to be able to work!
I have Office XP SBE in english, it did not bring power point, so I
installed powerpoint version 2000 in spanish and until a week ago it was
working fine.
What is happening?

Awfully difficult from here to see what happened on your computer a week
ago. You will have to be more explicit in what is and is not happening.

Ok, I have been trusting automatic updates for Windows XP all the time, and
also with Microsoft updates. A week ago the system was auto-updated with
something that appears as "Software distribution service 2.0" in the system
restore log.
After that update every time I open powerpoint 2000 in spanish a message of
an "unrecoverable error" appears, even if I try to open the program by
itself, no presentation yet. After this I am given the option to start in
safe mode, then to restore the installation, at this point I am asked for the
Office XP installation disk, which I put in, the system opens it, tries to
fix the problem or re-install powerpoint, I don't know what, and also I don't
understand why it asks for the office XP disk, it should ask for the office
2000 disk, right? every other office program is working perfectly well and
does not seem to be affected by the update.
After I make a system restore to a restore point vefore this date powerpoint
starts working again, as if nothing had happened.

That is weird. Have you tried a detect and repair for PowerPoint?

Mixing Office versions probably confuses things; it certainly can't help.

Did you install PPT 2000 after Office XP/SBE? That's another "not good idea"
... it's always best to install oldest software first, followed by newer
versions.

What you might try:

Uninstall both Office and PPT, assuming there are separate uninstallers for
each.

If possible run an Office registry cleaner for each version:

Completely uninstall Office - Office Erasers / Registry Cleaners
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00297.htm

Then install PPT 2000 and Office XP/SBE in that order. Choose a custom SBE
install and make sure it doesn't try to remove PPT.

It seems the software distribution message is a generic for many updates. I
decided to install every critical and not so critial update except for the
powerpoint XP update, stop the notifications for that update, and leave the
critical component for powerpoint XP without the update....I don't even have
powerpoint XP, so what is the point? I did not want to go through the whole
reinstallation process, and yes, I installed first the XP SBE, then office
2000 in spanish selecting only powerpoint, which I was lacking (old SBE had
powerpoint as part of the package, I did not realize this when I bought the
bundled copy), my office 2000 disks from my stolen laptop I still had...

If you don't want to uninstall/reinstall everything in the "correct" order, you
might try this instead:

Run Setup from the Office 2000 CD. It should start in maintenance mode. Let it do
a repair installation (in other words, don't change any features, just "freshen" the
installed files it needs).

Then do the same from the Office XP setup.
