(Software Distribution Service 2.0) Conflicts with Outlook Express

On January 5th, 2006 My XP Professional downloaded and installed an update
entitled "Software Distribution Service 2.0). After this download was
installed, I noticed that web links on all my Outlook Express emails would
not open.

I first tried the solutions mentioned for this problem in the Outlook
Express links. They failed. I performed a System Restore to a January 4th,
2006 checkpoint and my problem was fixed. However, the PC later detected and
installed the above update again, which is how I linked the problem to it.

My McAffee Virus scan has been disabled by the System Restore process and
I'm still trying to fix it. My PC is a recently purchased Dell Inspiron 9300
laptop. I'm not an active user/developer. Can someone assist in informing
Microsoft of this bug?

Neil,

Your suggested fix was the first thing I tried, but thank you for the
suggestion.

I do have good news to report though, perhaps by accident. Upon completing
my second iteration of the System Restore, the update package was again
detected. I wasn't about to download it again, but when I restarted my PC,
Windows XP downloaded it automatically. On this iteration, the download
installed and did not conflict with Outlook Express. I was also able to
eventually re-patch my virus scan.

The lesson I learned from this is that from this point forward, I'll never
manually initiate an update again. It's obviously safer to let XP do it
automatically as your shutting down or re-booting. The conflict must have
resulted from background processes running when I manually downloaded the
update. The only cost to me was an all-nighter, but working with this support
group was worth it.

Thanks!

Ah good news...

I find it unlikely that 'background processes' caused your problem.
There should be no difference between a manual update and an automatic
update. Also, the automatic update happens whenever a patch is
available, which might be and often is in the middle of a session. It
does not specifically do it on shutdown or reboot.

Problems can arise if you have something running, it is true. I suspect
that you might have had OE running when the update occurred.

Cheers,

Cliff

Enkidu,

OE could have been running during the first update, which caused the problem
but I don't think it was running during my second update, which brought the
problem back. Of course it was quite late and I'm not absolutely certain.

Regardless, I'm just glad the ordeal is over and I'm playing it extra-safe
from now on. When I get notified that an update is waiting for me to install
it, I'm shutting down/re-booting my system since it seems that XP will
auto-install for me, which is how it went down early this morning.
