So....!? What's the value/speed deal right now?

My first big upgrade was a 200mgz to a Celeron 300A that I clocked to 450.
That was a DEAL & I loved the performance. I was happy for a while.
Then it was a flip-chip P3 600 clocked at 800. I was happy.
Then P4s came out, over-priced, neutered, & I jumped ship to AMD & got an
1800+ but ran it at it's rated speed. Still saved a ton over a P4. I
was happy.
Then, & finally I am running a 2500+ (1833) at 3200+ (2200) & I am getting
the itch. Been running this CPU for over two years. TWO YEARS!!?!

I am feeling an onset of Upgrade Fever.

What is the speed vs value deal going right now? To be honest, I kept
myself away from the hardware pages/groups to keep from catching the Fever &
I am way behind the times. All I know is that I should maybe be lookin at
Socket 939. Any good, inexpensive CPUs that I can crank up to expensive
speeds? =) Best MB or at least chipset to go with that CPU would also
help.

What I gotta keep:

2-512 sticks of Mushkin PC3200 RAM the expensive low latency stuff
6800GT AGP video card (no PCI express for me)

TIA!

i'm sitting on an amd64 3000+ OC'd by 600mhz (equiv to 3400+) but it
needs more cooling than what i have in an ambiant temp room, so i reckon
you could buy a 3400 and OC that

For cheap, a Sempron 64 2600+ socket 764 overclocked to 2400. If you do, be
sure the motherboard isn't one of the ones that won't take two dual-sided
memory sticks. Some sort of nforce 3 chipset (250?).

Or better, the socket 939 with a Venice core 3200+ overclocked to 2400-2700.
You'd want the nforce 3 ultra chipset.

- that's the chipset I'm suggesting, for overclocking.

what about nforce4?
i got my venice 3000+ stable at 2.7G (338*8, HTT *3 @1.5x volt
(corecenter isnt ver specific about it, values tend to oscillate between
1.49 and 1.54)
havent testet further, but 345 doesnt work anymore.

285*9 also worked at 4* HTT and same voltages.

I agree completely with that. I have built a few S754 Sempron rigs recently,
and they are just plain evil for the cost.

Thinking that the AMD 64 X2 3800 might be a good choice but I want to wait a
2 months, maybe the price will go down & maybe I can get an AGP chipset that
I could have confidence in.

Seems to me that CPU prices are high these days. At least for my $374.00
the X2 comes with 2 cores.

I know it's kinda stealing a quick question here, but with the talk of S939
and S754, what is the performance difference between single and dual
channel?

Cheers,

So no point in goin s939 at the mo?

For a bottom-budget machine, a 754 with a Sempron 64 is great. But if you're
going to get an A-64 then the good, cooler-running, more memory-compatible
Venice ones are 939. (The Sempron 64 is more a chip off the
Winchester/Venice than off the socket 754 A-64's. If you think you might
want go to a dual-core later, then 939 would be it.
