So what is that bar on the top of the window?

I have a folder where I keep large video files. It is not an indexed
folder. When I open this folder it takes a few seconds for all the files
(maybe 6-10)to be listed. While I am waiting for the files to be listed
there is a colored bar that precedes from the left to the right of the
explorer address bar. It make take about 30 seconds for the bar to
precede all the way thought the explorer address bar. If I hit refresh I
get the same behavior. What, precisely is Vista doing? Is this because
these are large video files? What can't it just list the files?
thanks

Hi,

It's a progress bar. It displays while the folder contents are being loaded.
Why so slow? There are only 6 files in the directory. I have other
folders with thousands of files that are almost instantaneous. Vista
would not be looking in those video files would it?

Try unhiding system and hidden files and then delete the Thumbs.db file in
it. There might be something wrong with it, or it may be much larger than
it needs to be, if you had many more pictures or videos in that folder.

Or maybe one of these video files uses some dodgy codec that is causing
problem with the creation of the thumbnail. Does it do this is List view?

This is the standard progress bar that is used by Windows Explorer
while it is loading and/or refreshing the thumbnails for documents,
pictures, videos, etc.

In your case, you can maybe speed up this display by either updating
your codecs which could be slowing down the acquisition of thumbnails,
or by switching the view to details or some other view that does not
show thumbnails.

Questions - How many video files are in this particular folder? What
codecs to the videos use? What is the average file size?
^ to to files, about 3/4 of a GB each, mostly DIVX
