So this is NOT like pcAnywhere...

Mark Bierman

Well, I finally got the whole thing installed and working, only to find out
this is not at all like pcAnywhere or gotomypc.com as I had specifically
asked in my Oct 4 post "Is it time to upgrade for RDC?"

This is Terminal Services for a non-server, and this is not what I was
looking for. I need to be able to support someone while they are sitting at
their computer, so they can see what I am doing and I can see what they are
doing...

Is there a way to make RDC work so I can watch what my users is doing and
support them directly? I hope this wasn't a waste of time... Can anyone
help?

Thanks! Mark B

As I recall, "Sooner Al" specifically told you:

"If that's the case then Remote Assistance is an option. I did not realize
this was a help desk
function. You need to be running XP (Pro or Home) on your PC in order to use
Remote Assistance to
another XP (Pro or Home) box."

You acknowledge the response so you should not claim that you were not
provided the correct information.

Remote assistant will let you perform the help desk tasks that you need to
walk users through and Remote Desktop will let you take full control of the
PC for your own use. You do have 2 built in products that can do the two
functions that you said you needed to do and they are both "FREE" with the
OS unlike the .com solution that you said was costly.

so then my question to you is...

Where can I find a step by step to set this up so I can stop seemingly
pestering you guys about this?

If you go to Control Panel ->System on your XP machine and click on the
"Remote" tab you will see a link that will tell you exactly how to install
Remote Desktop capabilities on the XP system.

For the clients, open Help and Support on the main start menu and do a
search on "Remote Desktop" and it will give you instructions for installing
the RD client on all the various types of Windows base PCs.

As far as Remote assistant you should be able to just click your way through
it as long as you are not going through firewalls and such.

Go to "Start -> Help and Support" and search on "remote assistance" and/or look at these links...

You can also use the "shadow" functionality of Remote Desktop, but it
will require either another Windows XP machine that you can remote
desktop into remotely, then execute the shadow command to take over
the appropriate workstation, or a Windows 2003 Server (which won't
require the separate machine). This will allow you to connect to the
remote console and you can either "monitor" or "assist/take control"
depending on the user settings.

However, Remote Assistance may be an easier option for you.
