So just what have I got here, and what can I do with it?

My friend's 2 year old laptop just died (bad motherboard, not
replaceable says the local tech service), and she gave it to me to see
what I can salvage out of it.
The CPU is what I'm curious about, and whether I can salvage it for
a new computer. It is Intel, Socket 478. On the top is says: Pentium
4, 3.06GHZ/512/533, SL6PG MALAY.
I'm presuming its a Mobile Pentium 4, with the above numbers
indicating speed, cache size and bus speed.
My question is whether I can pop this guy into any socket 478
motherboard and build an inexpensive desktop around it.
I've homebuilt a few computers in the past, last one about 2 years
ago and I've always used AMD processors, so I'm a little out of date
and pretty ignorant about Intel. Please hold off the flames and help
bring me up to speed.
TIA,
Mike

Here's the information about this processor:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6PG

It's just a plain, OEM Socket 478 CPU with a CPU speed of
3.06 GHz. Still pretty good, with the right motherboard and
1 GB of RAM for Windows XP.

Nope, just P4.

Yep.

The cpu will likely just hold its nose and carry on regardless.

Where's the fun in that ?
and help bring me up to speed.

Down, boy.
