I've seen the key update tool fail in many installations, I've never
seen the repair/reinstall method fail on those systems.

Why would you ask a question that you and I both already know the answer
too?

I didn't tell the user to take the longer method, I pointed to the site
with clear instructions on how to do a repair/reinstall because the OP
posted that he used a "non-normal" repair/reinstall and it didn't work.

Why do you insist on missing the fact that the OP posted that he didn't
know what he was doing?

Because I am the OP you putz.
Which leads me to believe you have difficulty reading the standard
Latin alphabet. Kindly remove your head from your anus and proceed
from there.
Maybe you shoudl have posted a site that showed me how to do a complete
reformat? I mean that's guaranteed to work.
Normal people with actual minds start with easy solutions then move up.

What do you mean by that Sharon - are you suggesting that since the OP
didn't know how to do a repair/reinstall, since the OP stated that he
screwed it up, that he should read the repair/reinstall document as many
times as you've pasted it here?

I bought an OEM full Windows XP Pro CD off ebay. This was for a PC I
built for a realitive so I was not violating anything. The PC did
have a pirated version of XP Pro on it. I tried doing the repair
install, not through the normal way, I bootted from the CD ->
"Welcome to Setup" I did NOT choose "to repair a Windows XP
installation using the Recovery Console. "
I went throught he licensing stuff, chose the installation that I
wanted to 'repair"
Of course, repair was not one of the options.
I downloaded the Microsoft Keyupdatetool and entered the key fromt eh
OEM cde into that. I ran all the updated via WIndows update and
didn't get a software piracy/victim warning.

Was that the correct course of action?

I learned my lesson, no more bootleg software. Its too big a pain
inthe ass. Downloading cracks, hacks, keygens and modified DLL's just
isn't for me anymore.

How to change the key with a OEM XP CD is covered in the link below.
I need to change my XP Product KEY #18 on the FAQ list
