Unfortunately, more than a year ago I "was taken" by a crook who has now
been caught. I want to install a legit, "retail version" of "XP Pro" that I
will purchase directly from MS to replace a fraudulent copy. Are there
special procedures I need follow, or will the legit CD remove the now
corrupted, fraudulent OS? I am faced with the same situation with "Office XP
Pro." I have found this progrm available at decent prices. Is the MS "retail
version" product number 269-0458? I do not want to be stuck with an OEM
version. Thanks. {redoak}

Buy Windows XP Pro full version and perform a Repair Installation
using the new CD and Product Key:

If you have a qualifying product such as Windows 95/98/ME you can also
use Windows XP Pro Upgrade

For Office, simply install on top using new CD and Product Key.

Greetings --

You need to use your _legitimate_ full retail copy of WinXP Pro to
perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, using the new
CD and Product Key.

Thanks for your advice. Sounds simple enough even for a "green horn."
