SMTP errors sending non-mail items

Email sends and receives without error. Despite the statements to the contrary in the errors below the connection is active and regular email items process just fine

Non-mail items (appointment updates, task updates, etc.) generate SMTP errors (samples below) and remain in the outbox in a 'prepared to send' state

Not sure if this is Outlook, firewall, or ISP issue. Using broadband connection

Task 'Cox.net Mail - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0B) : 'Unknown Error 0x800CCC0B
Task 'Cox.net Mail - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

Outlook Express is only used for newsgroups
