smsc.exe shutting down programs

I have noticed lately that programs stop running. I can
also do a start->run->"command" and that window
disappear/closes after a number of seconds. I found out
that if I kill the process smsc.exe, programs stop
disappearing including command windows i have opened. I
have McAfee antivirus and everything is clean. What else
can I do, not sure what this program even does. Any help
would be appreciated.

If they did, they'd need to supply fixes for ten thousand other
worms, trojans and viruses that afflict their operating system.
People might start to get the idea that the insecurity of Windows
was Microsoft's fault, since Microsoft was supplying fixes.
Couldn't have that, could we?
