smax4pnp - help!

I have Dell computer running XP Home SP2 with Norton Internet Security 2005.
Lately I have been having my computer freeze up and it is always this
smax4pnp program that is not responding and causes me not to be able to shut
down the computer. When I do ctrl/alt/delete to shut it down, it says that
it will cause problems if I end now, I am afraid to tell it to end now and I
have been cutting it off at tower. I have googled this and it said this
should not be terminated unless it is causing problems. It is causing me
problems, what can I do? Thank you very much for any help offered.

That program is related to your soundcard. Try reinstalling/upgrading
the soundcard drivers. Get them from Dell's website for your specific
model computer.
