smartdrive tool

hi
I'm trying to install XPhome on an older PC (500MHZ, 128
Mb, 6GB) that has no OS on it.
It doesn't want to boot from the cd - because xp setup
doesn't run in DOS mode. So I ran winnt.exe from the cd
and started the setup from there.
At one point it advised me to install the smartdrive tool
to speed up the loading of files, but here is my question:

Where do I find this Smartdrv.exe? Is there a specific
folder I need to load it to?

thanks

I believe smart drive is an older intel tool, however if setting up
home is youre only quest its not going to help,if you install xp cd,
reboot computer,or shutdown,on restarting the text "press any key to boot
to cd" apears, this is xp in dos.At the info page select, install xp,however if as you
stated,"with no OS" xp home upgrade will reject the install w/o a prior windows
system on the drive. If its full home, youre ok,if its upgrade, locate even a used
copy of prior windows OS,install, then install xp.As far as smartdrive goes, enter
the bios and crank up the transfer rate for the hd,if smart drive is available, enable it.

I'd stop right there - 6GB is *far* too small a hard drive for XP. XP itself
requires 1.5 GB - and that's not including virtual memory or a swap/page
file, not to mention Office and anything else you want to install. 40GB
drives are cheap right now (Dabs.com had one on special for £30 inc VAT and
delivery - that's 75p per GB - I'm old enough to remember when 200MB drives
cost £400+) so there is no excuse not to upgrade to a larger drive. There is
also no excuse not to at least double your RAM too, though I assume your
system takes PC100 which is more expensive than any other type of RAM these
days (apart from RDRAM - Rambus). A 128MB module would cost you £32.89 inc
VAT and delivery from Crucial.com/uk (sorry I work in £s - I'm a Brit and
damned proud!) Compare this to PC2100 (which is 184-pin and *NOT* compatible
with your system) and you can pick up a 128MB module for £12.91. I suggest
you begin by searching www.crucial.com for your computer, or motherboard,
manufacturer to find the correct RAM for your system.

Have you also run the Upgrade Advisor (on the CD) before attempting
installation?

hi
yeah i know, 6 gb is too small - I only have XP (which I
use on my own system) and thought I'd try it on this older
system - probably better to go for 98 ...

trying some out
thnks for the tips!

You'd be in violation of the EULA if you did that - one licence per system
as it always has been since the dawn of time. OEM licences (if that's what
yours is) are also non-transferable

ok whoever wrote the first response....no comment.

you dont need a previous operating system *installed* of
your computer for xp upgerade to work(pro and home) just
have handy a copy of win98 to put in and maby i serial i
dunno if u need 1 or not but if u got cd u proberly got
serial. and smartdrive is just a .exe app so drag it onto
a spare floppy and pop it in and load it. Takes 2 secs.
just type a:\smartdrv.exe and your done.

you can get it from.....(google it...)

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/SMARTDRV.zip

just open it up, its a zip file with a .txt and the actual
app, just copy the file and open whilst in dos.

hope that helps

Hi,

Smartdrv.exe is a DOS tool, search with google.

Without, it runs ok, but MUCH slower!! Very useful to
keep on the bootup floppy.
