Small white/gray box on desktop

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition. There's a 1.5" square white/gray box in
the upper left quadrant of my desktop. It's there if I change the background,
theme... whatever. Doesn't seem to cause any problems, but certainly doesn't
belong there. Any ideas of why it's there and how to get rid of it?

Right click your desktop, click the desktop tab and then the customize
desktop button then the web tab. Make sure you havent any desktop items
active in the web pages box. Thats the only thing I can think it could be.
May be not.
